Millersville softball splits double header to earn first win of season

NEWBERRY, SC. – The Millersville Marauders split their Saturday double header, moving their record to 1-3 on the season. It was an up and down day for the team, as Millersville scored one run on one hit in game one before exploding for an 8-0 victory in the tail end of the DH.

GAME ONE (NEWBERRY 8 – MILLERSVILLE 1)
GAME TWO (MILLERSVILLE 8 – CONVERSE 0)
  • The Marauders erupted for six runs in the third inning, as Gabby Vucolo and Aleese Angelo successfully executed a double steal, putting Millersville on the board as Vuocolo swiped home.
  • Bumgardner added to the Marauder lead with a two-run blast to center, which was followed by RBI doubles from D'Ottavio, Sam Fried, and Little.
  • Little would strike again in the fifth with her second RBI double of the game, plating Breanna Clayton and extended the Millersville lead to seven. The Marauders would add another run in the inning on an RBI single from right fielder Taylor Campagna.
  • The Millersville offense would record 11 hits in the win, five of which were for extra bases.
  • Alex Schaefer earned the win in the circle, as she racked up five strikeouts over four innings of work, scattering three hits.
  • Clayton closed the door on the mercy rule victory with a scoreless fifth inning.

REACTION FROM HEAD COACH JEN PROBST:
On game one: "We came out flat offensively in game one. Gabby D'Ottavio was determined to break up the no hitter. Crutcher and Saverase came in and kept a really good hitting team off the bases."

On game two: "Game two Al was on fire on the mound. The defense both games was very strong, and you could see we learned a lot from day one. Kendra made an adjustment mid at bat and got her first home run. Hunters back to back doubles in game two were great for our momentum. Our first win of the year was truly a team win. Lots of people contributing in the dugout and on the field."

UP NEXT
The Marauders are back in action on Sunday for another double header against these same two teams. Millersville will take on Converse in game one and Newberry in game two, with first pitch scheduled for 10 a.m.
