MILLERSVILLE'S HISTORY IN SR1
- Since making the move to Division II in 2012-13, Millersville has produced at least one Super Region 1 placewinner each season, including five in 2019 and four in 2020. The Marauders produced a national qualifier in Shane Ruhnke in 2018, when he took third place. The following year, Ruhnke won the super region title at 165 pounds while Colton Dull (197) finished as the runner-up. The Marauders have had some close calls in recent years with David Wuestner (285) and Evan Morrill (184) placing fourth in 2019, and Ryan McGuire (141) and Jarrett Feeney (165) placing fourth in 2020.
MILLERSVILLE'S OUTLOOK
- While the official tournament seedings are not released until Friday, a trio of Marauders could make deep runs in the tournament. The Super Region 1 Coaches Rankings, released on Monday, have Brandon Connor ranked No. 2 at 165 pounds, Devin Flannery ranked No. 3 at 133 pounds and Anthony Yacovetti ranked No. 4 at 174 pounds.
- Connor's bracket is particularly wide open. Gannon's Evan Fisler, is ranked No. 3 and owns a 35-9 career record. Connor is 17-9, and six of his losses have come against Division I opponents, and two others came against Mercyhurst's Dillon Walker, who is the No. 1-ranked wrestler in Super Region 1 at 174 pounds, and against the expected top seed at 165, Dillon Keane of Pitt-Johnstown. That match was decided by a 3-2 score. Connor last wrestled at the Super Region 1 Championships in 2020, and he did so at 157 pounds, losing two close decisions.
- Flannery enters the championships with a 14-4 record and a team-high four technical falls. Only two of his losses have come against Division II foes, and both of those wrestlers are ranked ahead of him in the super region. No. 1 Eric Bartos of Mercyhurst edged Flannery 11-9 in January, and Colin Wickramartna of Kutztown scored a fall in January. Flannery did not wrestle either of the two wrestlers ranked behind him in the top five.
- Yacovetti has had a breakout season with a 13-3 record and four-straight wins. Because of an injury, he did not wrestle against Mercyhurst's Keane or No. 2 Brock Biddle of Pitt-Johnstown in duals, but he did see Gannon's Joey Petrella on Jan. 14. Petrella, ranked No. 3, edged Yacovettiy 4-2 with a late score.
- Anthony Giampietro is ranked No. 5 at 184 pounds, and it's been a solid first season with the Marauders with a 9-5 record. He missed time early in the season. Three of his losses have come against the three top-ranked wrestlers in the super region. Seton Hill's Brandon Matthews, ranked No. 2, barely got by Giampietro in their Feb. 5 match that ended with a 5-3 score.
- Also ranked in the super region's top six is heavyweight Bishop McCoy, who comes in at No. 5. McCoy has been out of action since Jan. 29 but posted a 13-13 ranking before that. Bruce Vaughan enters the championships ranked No. 6 at 197 pounds. He's gone 4-4 in his last eight matches.
- Millersville's lineup also includes Bryce Beatty at 125 pounds, Matt Morris at 141 pounds, Eli Tuckey at 149 pounds, and Jonathan Parrilla at 157 pounds.
SUPER REGION 1 HISTORY
- Millersville and Franklin & Marshall first met in 1993-94 and have wrestled at least once each season since with two meetings in 2003-04 and 2004-05. Millersville dominated the early part of the series, winning 16 of the first 19 meetings. F&M turned the tide in 2011 and has since won nine of the last 10.
