KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Millersville controlled possession and pace of the game for nearly all of overtime session. But in a matter of just 15 seconds, Kutztown turned a Millersville corner and shot on goal into the game-winning goal, credited to Jillian Buchman with just 30 seconds remaining on the clock. Kutztown improved to 12-2 (5-1) with the 1-0 victory while Millersville dropped to 11-3 (4-2).
Inside the final minute of overtime play, Millersville's
Qhayiya Nogoduka drew a penalty corner. The Marauders got the ball to
Georgia Werkiser, who took a shot from the top of the circle, but it was controlled by Kutztown keeper Katie Dotterweich, who finished the game with nine saves. Kutztown immediately flipped the field on the restart. Greenleigh McGehee dribbled up the right sideline and split two Millersville defenders, creating a three-on-two breakaway for the Golden Bears. She pushed a pass to her right to Jillian Buchman, and Buchman hit a quick cross intended for Rachel Dusman, but the Marauders go the unluckiest of breaks when the ball careened off a hustling Millersville defender and past keeper
Kerstin Koons who had stepped out to cut off the pass.
Kutztown has now won three-straight games over nationally-ranked teams and four in a row overall--all by shutout. Millersville has now dropped two of three after starting the season 10-0--both times falling in the closing seconds. It was Millersville's first overtime game of the season.
The Marauders drew the only two penalty corners in the overtime period, and both shots taken--one by
Kate Strickland and one by Werkiser--were saved. Dotterweich saved the day numerous times for the Golden Bears. Millersville dominated the game statistically, holding a 12-4 advantage in shots and a placed 10 of them on goal. Millersville out-shot Kutztown 6-1 in the fourth quarter and overtime. Dotterweich also made three saves in the fourth. Three minutes into the third quarter, Dotterweich got some help from her teammate as Danielle Panati blocked a
Kate Strickland shot as the last line of defense.
