Dalstad moves into top 10 in digs as Marauders top Huskies 3-1

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Millersville took care of business on the road on Friday night, defeating the Bloomsburg Huskies in four sets.

The Marauders (14-10, 4-5 PSAC) returned to the win column after dropping their last pair of conference matchups. Bloomsburg (5-17, 3-6 PSAC) saw its struggles at home continue as the team is now 1-4 at the Nelson Field House. The season series is now split between the teams, as the Huskies snuck away with a five-set win last month in Pucillo Gymnasium.

In the third set redshirt junior libero Becca Dalstad moved into tenth place in program history with her 1,114th dig, passing Kathy Howard who played from 2005-08. Next on the list is Dalstads former assistant coach, Erin Harman, who recorded 1,198 digs from 2012-15.

HOW IT HAPPENED
(25-14, 25-16, 25-21, 25-16)
  • The Huskies struggled at the start of the first set, as four attacking errors put the Marauders ahead 6-1. Leading 9-4, 'Ville earned nine of the next 11 points to jump ahead 17-6. Kylie Airesman dominated the first set as she recorded eight kills.
  • With the second set tied 8-8, the Huskies scored three straight points to move ahead 11-8. A pair of kills from Rylee Thomas kept the Marauders within reach, but Millersville was unable to close the gap. A four-point run put Bloom ahead for good, with the Huskies taking the final six points of the set to even the match at 1-1.
  • The third set featured streaky play. A six-point run put 'Ville ahead 9-2 and Bloomsburg answered back with a four-point rally to get within two. The Marauders then produced another six-point rally to lead 15-7. Despite trailing 19-10, the Huskies pulled off another lengthy run, scoring six straight to make it 19-16. A four-point Bloomsburg rally forced a tie at 21-21. Rose Vail took over to close the set, as Millersville took the final four points with Vail picking up three kills in the process.
  • 'Ville cruised through the fourth set, taking a 5-0 lead, and never looking back. Leading 13-6, the Marauders put together another five-point rally to move ahead 18-6 and secure the match victory.

REACTION FROM HEAD COACH BRIAN SMITH
"Our control was really good tonight. We started strong in each set with our passing which allowed us to run quick on offense and that helped stark an impressive hitting advantage in the first set and secured some confidence and belief in staying with our system and keep working to have a ball control advantage or work back to it when at times we struggled."

"We also served very well, had strong hitting numbers from Kylie and Rylee and Rose. Emma did a good job spreading the ball around and we did a pretty good job with net defense.

"Special shout-out to Becca who in our third set became the 10th all time digs player in program history and doing so in her third year of competition."

UP NEXT
  • The Marauders are back in action tomorrow, Oct. 22 at Lock Haven. The team returns home next week for its final three home matches of the regular season.
