We have tried to become that kind of unit where we can make more of those plays. We did have a few tonight, but we left a lot out there. "

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS

  • Millersville is looking for its second win and first home win of 2021. Last week’s loss to West Chester was far closer than the final score would indicate. Millersville trailed 28-14 early in the fourth quarter and had possession of the ball with a chance to cut it to a one-score game. West Chester scored twice in the final five minutes.
  • After coming off the bench in each of the first four games, redshirt freshman Jared Jenkins is slated to make his first career start Saturday, and he will be the third quarterback to make a start in Millersville’s first five games. Jenkins has provided the Marauders with some spark off the bench. He leads the team with 366 yards passing and has been on the field for every Millersville TD drive. He threw two touchdowns last week vs. West Chester, including a 77-yard bomb to Hakim Melvin, which is the team’s longest play from scrimmage.
  • Millersville is hoping it can connect on more plays like it did against West Chester. The Marauders hit on three passes plays of at least 29 yards, two of which went to Melvin, a redshirt freshman. Melvin finished with 151 yards on five catches. He was the first Marauder to record more than 150 yards receiving since Jamal Smith went for 164 against Shippensburg in 2010. Before Saturday, Melvin had just three catches for 44 yards.
  • Mekhi Alexander found the end zone for the second time this season vs. West Chester. He leads the team 13 catches, but 11 of those grabs came in the first two weeks.
  • Tyler Tate has given opponents problems with his pass rush. He’s now totaled four sacks in four games with at least a half-sack in three of four. He’s second in the PSAC in both sacks and tackles for loss (8). No Marauder has averaged one sack per game since 2021 Millersville Hall of Fame inductee Lee Rizzotto in 1999.
  • Steve Sweeney has shown a knack for finding the football. His five passes defended rank sixth in the PSAC, and his two picks are tied for third. Sweeney also forced a fumble vs. West Chester.
  • Isaiah Onuschak had another productive defensive performance last Saturday as he recorded two sacks--his first of the season. Onuschak's 6 ½ tackles for loss rank sixth in the PSAC, and he continues to lead the league in tackles with 11 ½ per game.

SCOUTING THE BALD EAGLES

  • Lock Haven is in its first season under John Kelling, who was appointed to the position in January 2020, just before the COVID-19 shutdowns of athletics. He came to Lock Haven following a successful run as the defensive coordinator at Frostburg State.
  • Lock Haven relies on its running game and six of the team’s seven touchdowns have come on the ground, and the team has 138 rushing attempts compared to just 93 pass attempts. Quarterback Ethan Persa has completed 44.74 percent of his 76 attempts, totaling 372 yards in four games (93.0 per game). Lock Haven’s rushing offense ranks sixth in the PSAC in yards per game, and Dean Wakefiled, who has totaled 192 yards on 31 carries, ranks seventh in the league in yards per carry average (6.2). His average was boosted by a 95-yard run against Lincoln. That stands as the longest run in the PSAC this season by 32 yards. Dante Graham and Dymeir Still have also totaled over 100 yards rushing.
  • After pitching a shutout in the opener, Lock Haven has given up 59, 57 and 45 points playing against three high-powered offenses. that all rank in the top half of the PSAC. The last three Lock Haven opponents have both rushed for at least 169 yards and thrown for at least 292 yards. Justin Anderson is the team’s top pass rusher, totaling 2 1/2 sacks.
  • Special teams will be a key Saturday as well. Lock Haven has allowed both a kickoff return and punt return for touchdown.

THE LAST TIME OUT

  • Millersville: West Chester 42, Millersville 14  (Sept. 25, 2021) - Millersville pulled within two scores late in the third quarter but couldn't find the extra scores or extra stops it needed, and West Chester tacked on two, late four-quarter scores to finish off a 42-14 win over the Marauders in the PSAC East opener. West Chester (3-1, 1-0 PSAC East) won the game at the line of scrimmage, totaling 274 yards rushing while on the other side of the ball, harassing Millersville (1-3, 0-1 PSAC East) quarterbacks all game long, totaling eight sacks for 63 lost yards. In the fourth quarter, trailing 28-14, Millersville came up empty on all four of its offensive possessions while West Chester leaned on its ground game to kill the clock and set up a 24-yard touchdown toss from Shane Dooley with 5:54 to play, and a 30-yard scramble from Desman Jackson with 1:48 left.
  • Lock Haven: ESU 45, Lock Haven 21 (Sept. 25, 2021) - Lock Hven made its long-awaited Hubert Jack Stadium debut tonight, but visiting East Stroudsburg (3-1, 1-0 PSAC East) used a strong second-half to down LHU, 45-21. Behind three first-half rushing touchdowns, the upset-minded Bald Eagles trailed ESU, 31-21 at halftime. The Warriors however used two fourth-quarter touchdowns to the secure the win. Dante Graham ran for two touchdowns in the second quarter.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Lock Haven holds the all-time series lead (20-12-1), but Millersville has won gone 9-4 against Lock Haven since 1996. The two teams did not meet between 1959 and 1996 and had another long hiatus between 1997 and 2006. Lock Haven joined the PSAC East in 2013, and since then, they hold a 4-3 edge in the series, winning four in a row from 2013-2016. Since 2007, only one game has been decided by more than 13 points. That came in the form of Millersville's 48-23 win in 2019. The 48 points scored were most by either team in the history of the series.
  • THE LAST MEETING (Millersville 48, Lock Haven 23 (Oct. 12, 2019): The record had been held for 20 years by Millersville Athletics Hall of Famer Drew Folmar. No longer.
