Volleyball splits double header to open season

WEST CHESTER, Pa. -  The Millersville University volleyball team split their double header on Friday as the Marauder's picked up a win in their second match of the season. The win against Mercyhurst was the first Millersville win since Dec. 5 of 2019 against Shippensburg University, 638 days ago.

HOW IT HAPPENED
In Game One (Jefferson 3 – Millersville 2)
  • Millersville got off to a hot start, winning the first two sets against Jefferson University. Both sets went to overtime as Ville picked up 27-25 and 28-26 wins. The Rams would take the next three sets, winning the decisive fifth set by a final of 15-10.
  • With the loss Millersville fell to 8-6 against Jefferson since the start of the 2008 season.
  • "Our whole team did a very nice job passing which allowed our setter to settle into some sort of rhythm," head coach Brian Smith said.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Ville led in aces by a 12-9 advantage.
  • Lauren Lucas led Ville with 19 kills.
  • Emma Lugwig tallied a team high 40 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
In Game Two (Millersville 3 – Mercyhurst 1)
  • Mercyhurst won the first set 25-19, before Ville flipped the script, winning the following three sets to secure their first win of the season.
  • "What stood out to me was Madison Von Neida passing above a 2.5 and Emma running our offense," Smith added.
  • With the win, Millersville improved to 3-10 all time against Mercyhurst.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Ville outscored Mercyhurst 76-53 over the final three sets.
  • The Marauders led in digs with 50 and kills with 40 over the course of the four sets.
  • Rebecca Dalstad led all players with 21 digs while teammate Emma Ludwig led in assists with 32.
Additional Quotes from Coach Smith
  • "We needed our young team to just continue to get a feel for each other at real game speed."
  • "We talked prior to the weekend that it's a tough turnaround when you have four matches in two days. We saw a difference in our second match, I felt we had more left in our tank for our second match and our pace of play really started to take its toll on our opponent."
UP NEXT
  • The Marauders are back in action Saturday morning with another double header, starting at 10:00 a.m. against Goldey-Beacom. Ville wraps up the Ram Fest Tournament at 2:00 p.m. against Franklin Pierce.
  • "We tell the team to get rest and stay hydrated," Smith said of the quick turnaround. "It's a grind, we need to have more grit than our opponents."
