BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The performances from his Millersville men's tennis team in both doubles and singles over the weekend's ITA Atlantic Regional was enough for head coach
Matt Helsel to get excited about the season ahead. The Marauders exhibited a deep team with both
Frank Yanni and
Brandon Caban reaching the consolation semifinals in the main singles draw and
Dylan Tull winning the consolation side of the B draw in addition to deep runs from several doubles teams.
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
• The event included 13 teams from the PSAC and Mountain East. Yanni and Caban, both playing in the main draw bracket, both battled to the consolation semifinals. After a first round loss, Caban scored wins in the consolation round of 16 and the quarterfinals before dropping an epic 7-6 (4), 3-6 (15-17) tiebreaker to Bloomsburg's Morris Haab in the semis. Similarly, Yanni finished the weekend with a 3-2 record. He won three matches in the consolation bracket, and he was finally eliminated in a 6-3, 4-6 (6-10) battle.
• Tull had a busy weekend as well. After losing in the B draw first round, he worked his way through the consolation bracket with threes. He was the last man standing in the bracket after a walkover in the final.
•
Shaurya Piplani won his first two matches in the B draw and reached the quarterfinals.
• In doubles, Caban and
Lino Morin went 2-1, reaching the quarterfinals of the main draw bracket. Yanni and
Carlos Martinez-Lucas ripped off two wins before falling 7-5 in the semis to the eventual runners-up.
• Piplani and Tull won the B draw bracket with a 4-0 record.
REACTION FROM COACH MATT HELSEL
• On the team's performance: "We played very well this weekend. This is the most talented men's team I've ever coached. That doesn't mean they are the best team, but they have the most ability. Our doubles were very solid all weekend, as we had a team make it to the championship semifinals and another team win the B draw. In singles, we played well as a whole, but
Dylan Tull,
Brandon Caban,
Shaurya Piplani and
Lino Morin all had great weekends. As usual, we also got solid performances from Carlos, Frank and
Santiago Ramos.
• On transitioning to duals: "I'll be anxious to see how this translates to dual matches. We've been figuring out our lineup, but I think it's becoming clearer. I'm very excited to see this team play another school head-to-head. Those days are coming soon.
