Millersville rallies for extra-inning win then rolls in game two for a sweep of Shepherd

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Millersville's sweep of Shepherd on Friday was quite a showcase for two of the team's freshmen. Aleese Angelo hit two key home runs and pitcher Alex Schaefer threw 6 2/3 lights-out innings in relief in the doubleheader that included a three-run rally for a 6-5 nine-inning win in game one and a 7-2 romp in game two.

Shepherd (18-7, 14-6 PSAC East) entered the day one game out of first place in the PSAC East, but Millersville (15-9, 9-9 PSAC East) pulled its division record to .500. Angelo led the Marauders at the plate in both games, going 5-for-9 with five RBIs.

GAME ONE (MILLERSVILLE 6, SHEPHERD 5 (9 INNINGS))
• Millersville trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Devan Masciulli led off with a walk, and Rebecca Blatt singled up the middle. Angelo followed with a three-run blast to center field to tie the game. Schaefer entered in relief in the top of fifth and blew away the PSAC's No. 2-ranked lineup over the next five innings. She was perfect in relief, not allowing a single baserunner while striking out seven.
• Schaefer (4-2) kept Shepherd off the bases, and Millersville's scoring chances were few as well. The Marauders' opportunity came in the ninth when Gabi Turner drew a leadoff walk. Alexis Staniec entered as a pinch runner, and two wild pitches moved her to third. With Savannah Kolenda at the plate, another pitch zipped past the catcher to the backstop, and the speedy Staniec slid home safely for the game-winning run.
• Angelo and Faith Willenbrock both had three hits and Blatt went 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored.

GAME TWO (MILLERSVILLE 7, SHEPHERD 2)
• Angelo kept Millersville's momentum rolling after the walk-off win in the opener. In the bottom of the first, the rookie smacked a two-run homer to right-center. Blatt added a run-scoring single in the second, and the Marauders piled on in the fourth with RBI singles from Hunter Little, Alyssa Stover and Willenbrock.
• Meanwhile, Maddie Guinane pitched brilliantly for 5 1/3 innings. She gave up just three hits over the first five innings. In the third, after a leadoff triple, she forced two weak ground outs and an infield pop up to strand the runner. In the sixth, Millersville called on Schaefer, who closed out the win with 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
• Turner drew three walks, Angelo went 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs, and Stover drove in two as well.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM COACH JEN PROBST
• On the team's resolve in game one:
"I feel like we are finally gaining back our momentum we lost from the 10-day pause. We also had every hitter the first time through produce a quality at bat."
On Angelo's contributions after the layoff: "Aleese got thrown right into games without any practice. Now she's had a week to see some live at bats plus get practice reps. It's great to see her swinging just like she started the season: big!"

NOTES
• Schaefer has allowed just one run and has not walked a batter in her last five outings, spanning 13 1/3 innings. She's totaled 18 strikeouts in that stretch.
• Savannah Kolenda received her first starts of the season and recorded a hit in both games. She also drew two walks in game one.

UP NEXT
• Millersville is on the road at Shepherd Saturday to finish the series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
