MATCH PREVIEW

  • Millersville hosts Mercyhurst on Friday and Edinboro on Saturday for two key PSAC matches. Millersville is 1-1 in league play while Mercyhurst and Edinboro are leading the standings with perfect 3-0 records. Mercyhurst is ranked No. 4 in the Oracle/ITA Atlantic Region rankings, and Edinboro is ranked No. 3 regionally and No. 4 in the nation.
  • Millersville may be 1-4, but it is oh-so-close to being undefeated. Three of Millersville's losses have come by a 4-3 score--the difference of one match in each dual. In each of those three losses, one of the singles defeats came in three sets with a tiebreaker.
  • Carlos Martinez-Lucas has been outstanding at No. 1 singles, posting a 4-1 record with a four-match winning streak. He's also paired with Frank Yanni for a 4-1 doubles record. He is the defending PSAC Athlete of the Week.
  • Freshman Zach Pernia has been a surprise at No. 6 singles, going 4-1 so far. He started the season with four-straight wins.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

  • Mercyhurst has won three consecutive matches after playing a challenging non-conference slate that featured matches against the No. 2 (Charleston) and No. 3 (Fairmont State) ranked teams in the Atlantic Region and three matches against Division I opponents. Mercyhurst has won their three PSAC matches by a combined 19-2 score. Unai Amilleta Gonzalez is 8-0, winning four matches at both No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Gonzalez and Arseniy Sklyarov have the team's most successful doubles pairing with a 6-1 record (3-0 PSAC) at No. 2 doubles.
  • Edinboro, now 6-3, is on a roll with five consecutive wins, and the team is fresh off a 5-2 upset of Fairmont State. Edinboro won five of the six singles matches. Takahiro Inoue is an impressive 5-1 at No. 1 singles while Ruben Acuna is 5-0 at No. 2 singles. Thibault Dorval is 7-1 in the No. 3 spot, Gustavo Martins is 6-0 in the No. 4 spot, and the team has not lost a match at No. 5 singles this season. While Edinboro is 40-12 in singles matches, they are not quite as successful in doubles, posting a 15-12 record.
For the last several years, Mercyhurst and Edinboro have been the top men's programs in the PSAC. I'm not sure that this year is any different, so we're excited to see how we measure up. They bring a lot of talent so it'll be a big challenge, but that's why we suit up. I can't wait.
Matt Helsel, Millersville Head Coach

SERIES HISTORY

  • Millersville and Mercyhurst first met in 1983 but Mercyhurst joined the PSAC in 2008, and since then, the Lakers have won nine of 13 meetings, including seven in a row. During that seven-match winning streak, Millersville has scored just two points (8-1 in 2018 and 6-1 in 2019). Millersville's last win came at home in 2012 by a 7-2 score.
  • The series between Millersville and Edinboro goes back to 1982. Edinboro has won eight meetings in a row, and it was the team that knocked Millersville out of the 2019 PSAC Tournament by a 4-0 score. In the 2019 regular season, Edinboro won 5-2. Millersville's last win came in the 2012 PSAC Tournament.
