Millersville rolls to doubleheader sweep of Bowie State

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Millersville University softball took care of business against Bowie State Tuesday at Seaber Stadium, sweeping a doubleheader by scores of 3-0 and 9-1.

Millersville improved to 13-9 with the sweep, winning game one behind Maddie Guinane's start and Gabi Turner's three scoreless innings of relief. The bats came alive in game two and ended in six innings on Rebecca Blatt's two-run homer.

GAME ONE (MILLERSVILLE 3, BOWIE STATE 0)
Maddie Guinane (4-4) struck out five and scattered five hits over the first four innings and handed the ball to Turner, who picked up a save with three hitless innings. Millersville's bats were held in check by Evelyn Buelhman (0-5). She allowed just five hits, but Millersville needed some help to get its runs on the board. An error in the first helped Millersville load the bases, and Turner drew a bases-loaded walk.
• In the third inning, Turner picked up her second RBI on a sacrifice fly after a wild pitch moved Gabriella D'Ottavio to third. The third run came in the fifth when Blatt scored on a wild pitch after leading off the inning with a triple.
• Blatt scored two runs and reached base on a triple. D'Ottavio went 2-for-3. Faith Willenbrock went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

GAME TWO (MILLERSVILLE 9, BOWIE STATE 1)
• Millersville totaled 14 hits and every starter recorded at least one. Blatt went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and the game-ending home run. Turner went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Starting pitcher Morgan Crutcher started the scoring in the second inning with an RBI single. Devan Masciulli and Aleese Angelo also drove in runs with singles in the four-run inning.
• The Marauders were stuck at four until Turner's two-run double in the fifth. Hunter Little's sacrifice fly later brought Turner home. In the sixth, Karli Heft led off with a single to left, and Blatt smacked her eighth homer of the year to put the eight-run rule into effect.
• Crutcher (6-3) surrendered just three hits. Alex Schaefer pitched the final two innings and fanned five of the seven batters she faced.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM COACH JEN PROBST
• On offensive adjustments in game two:
"We took much better swings at balls in the zone especially in game two. I was really impressed how our pitchers came in swinging well behind some great pitching. The energy and effort were there, it was only a matter of time before we started squaring up balls again."
On carrying momentum into the weekend: "I think a lot of our hitters worked through some of their physical and mental offensive struggles and are ready to get back into conference play.

NOTES
• Heft's single in game two was her first career hit.
• Schaeffer has allowed just one run and two walks while striking out 10 in her last three appearances totaling 9 2/3 innings.
• Angelo's eight-game hitting streak came to an end in game one, but she extended her on-base streak to 12 consecutive games with a walk in game one and a hit in game two.

UP NEXT
• Millersville returns to PSAC East play Friday at home against Shepherd. Shepherd currently sits in second place with a 14-4 division record.
