Millersville falls to Bloomsburg in rainy battle

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Millersville women's lacrosse team faced its first bout of weather in the 2021 season taking on Bloomsburg in the rain under the lights, but it was the Huskies who came out victorious in the battle after scoring 11 unanswered goals through the first 35 minutes of play. The Marauders fell to Bloomsburg 16-5.
 
Millersville's record falls to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in conference play. Bloomsburg improves to 4-2 on the season and in the PSAC.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Millersville got a late start on the offensive end allowing Bloomsburg to secure 10 unanswered goals in the first half. After the Huskies' 11th goal about four minutes into the second half, MaryCait Dorley answered back for the Marauders collecting a behind-the-net pass from Amanda Juliano for Millersville's first goal of the game.
  • Bloomsburg tried to keep its 11-point lead, but Sara Burney brought it back within 10 points scoring with just over 15 minutes left in the game. Back-to-back goals from Grace Cobaugh brought the Marauders with nine points, but Bloomsburg continued to hold onto its lead with three more goals through the rest of the half. Genevieve Speights secured the Marauders' fifth goal of the game with an assist from Gillian Zimmerman.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Bloomsburg held the advantage in shots (30-10), ground balls (21-19), draw controls (13-10), and free position shots (6-3).
  • Cobaugh led the team in points with two off two goals.
  • Speights led the team in draw controls with five followed by Zimmerman with three.
  • Burney ripped the most shots for Millersville with three, two of which landed on goal.
  • Michella Salvitti anchored the Marauders' defense causing three turnovers and scooping up three ground balls.
  • Kaleigh Sasdelli recorded all 60 minutes in goal and made eight saves.

  • "We had a very slow start in the first half, but we talked at halftime about areas that we could control and see success. We wanted to use little pieces to build into the bigger ones."
  • "Grace [Cobaugh] is a hard worker and she always works for the team. We needed someone to step up today and she showed great leadership and initiative."
  • "We have to keep working and moving forward together. We are a team and everyone's role is important as we prepare for the next game."
