Marauders baseball falls 9-2 to Clarion

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Millersville Marauders baseball team took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning over Clarion University, but the Golden Eagles struck back with four runs of their own in the bottom half. They never relinquished the lead, going on to secure the 9-2 win.

Senior Paul Wilson earned the first start of his Marauders career but got in trouble in that first inning, surrendering four runs (three earned) but struck out three batters in his two innings of work.

Clarion starter Trevor McGee was the story of the game, as the senior lefty tossed a complete game, struck out eight Marauders, and only allowed seven hits.

Luke Trainer and Cole Houser both earned RBIs in the first inning, and Cole Friese, Bren Taylor, and Eric Callahan all finished the game 2-for-4.

Millersville had won seven straight games versus Clarion.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Millersville started off the game by manufacturing some runs. Cole Friese smacked a leadoff single and stole second base, then advanced to third after a Jimmy Losh groundout. Luke Trainer sent a long fly to left center for the sacrifice fly that brought Friese home for the 1-0 lead.
• The Marauders weren't done in the inning: Bren Taylor and Eric Callahan stroked back-to-back singles, then Pete Vaccaro and Cole Houser drew back-to-back walks to allow Taylor to score to make it 2-0.
• Clarion added four runs in the bottom of the first inning and two runs in the third to take control of the game. Nick Fugh and Will Constantin both logged three-hit days for the Golden Eagles, while Kasey Shughart chimed in with two hits and three RBIs to lead his team on the day.

REACTION FROM HEAD COACH JON SHEHAN
• "Clarion played really well. Hats off to them for bouncing back tonight. Their starter did a great job and they swung the bats very well. They also capitalized on a few mistakes we made defensively and on the bases. Back at it tomorrow."

NOTES
• Cole Friese's stolen base ties moves him up into a tie for fifth place with Ryan McCormick (63 career steals) on the all-time program list. Dan Neff is in fourth place with 82.
• Eric Callahan's double today was his fourth extra-base hit of the year, which is tied for the team lead with Luke Trainer.
• Saturday's game was played at a neutral site, Wild Things Park, which is home to the Washington Wild Things as well as the Cal U baseball team.

UP NEXT
• The Marauders stay in western Pennsylvania for another day and travel to Seton Hill University on Sunday, March 14 to face the Griffins at 1 p.m. to complete the weekend road trip. Remember to turn your clocks ahead an hour!
