Baseball drops final game of road trip 13-6 to Seton Hill

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The rough weekend in western Pennsylvania came to an end on Sunday for the Millersville Marauders baseball team at Seton Hill University after a 13-6 loss. Both teams finished with 12 hits apiece, but the Ville could not seem to string them together in the right situations.

Nick Mancuso saw game action for the first time this spring with a start in right field and delivered two hits and two RBIs. Likewise, Mark Miller entered the starting lineup for the first time as the designated hitter and added a hit and an RBI.

Seton Hill got off to a quick start against Ville starter Jeff Taylor in the top of the first inning, as the Griffins' Jordan Fiedor smashed a leadoff home run. The team added three more runs (two earned) in the inning and maintained the lead for the remainder of the game.

The Griffins also got a solid performance from starter Ben Vicini, who threw 4.2 innings, allowed two earned runs and struck out six. Seton Hill, which was voted in a tie for No. 1 in the PSAC West Preseason Poll, has now won six straight games to begin the 2021 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Marauders had to primarily play from behind for the second straight day after Seton Hill took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but the bats got going in the top of the second. Bren Taylor and Eric Callahan led off the frame with back-to-back singles, and Nick Mancuso singled through the left side in his first at-bat of 2021 to plate Taylor and get the run across.
• Luke Trainer drew a two-out walk in the third inning and was promptly driven in by Bren Taylor with a triple that was walloped down the right field line to bring the Marauders within four runs of Seton Hill.
• The sixth inning was also productive for the Ville, as pinch hitter Tyler Wright reached base on a two-out double down the left field line. Mancuso then singled up the middle for his second RBI of the afternoon and, after advancing to second on a wild pitch, was driven in by a Mark Miller single.
• Three walks (from Jimmy Losh, Trainer, and Callahan) and a balk (which scored Losh) in the seventh inning also allowed Millersville to threaten to cut into Seton Hill's lead. Wright lined a ball to left field with the bases loaded that almost squeaked through to clear the bases but a diving grab from Seton Hill's Tommy Pellis kept it to just a sacrifice fly and a single RBI.
• Christian Wingard came out of the bullpen to pitch the last three innings of the game, allowing one hit, one earned run, and striking out four.

REACTION FROM HEAD COACH JON SHEHAN
• "We learned a lot about ourselves from this weekend. Potential and talent are just that… potential and talent. We need to play better baseball—limit free passes, work ahead of hitters, make plays defensively—just play better baseball. Hopefully this was a wake-up call weekend."

NOTES
• Sophomore Darin Miller earned his first start of the 2021 season at first base.
• Trainer's double was good for a team-leading fifth extra-base hit of the season. Along with two walks on the day, his on-base percentage increases to .682 (also a team-high.)
• Sophomore Bren Taylor's two hits give him eight total for the season and a .444 average. Through 18 games in the spring of 2020, Bren had collected nine hits and a .257 average.
• Callahan's two hits on the day make it three straight multi-hit games for the fifth-year shortstop.

UP NEXT
• Millersville will be back on the field next Friday, March 19 on the road at Lock Haven University for a PSAC East doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. The Marauders will then host the Bald Eagles for a pair of games on Saturday, March 20 at Cooper Park.
