CALIFORNIA, Pa. - Zayan Collins scored 34 points and combined with Bryson Lucas to hit eight of the team's 10 3-pointers, as the California Vulcans held off the Millersville Marauders 87-76 Sunday afternoon in PSAC crossover action.
Millersville (7-3, 2-3 PSAC) and Cal U (7-3, 2-2 PSAC) played a nearly even game for 35 minutes, but the Vulcans' 16-6 run over the final five minutes of the first half turned a one-point Millersville lead into a nine-point Vulcans' advantage. Millersville would never again retake the lead despite closing the gap to two points early in the second, and to three points twice late.
The Vulcans benefited from 10 second-chance points in the first half alone and finished out-rebounding Millersville, 36-29 with 10 of those coming on the offensive glass. While Millersville made nine 3-pointers--its second-highest total of the season--Cal U made 10-of-23 and shot 52.4% from the field. It is only the second team to shoot better than 50% against Millersville this season.
Justin Nwosu led Millersville with a season-high 19 points , leading four Marauders in double figures.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
• Millersville led 31-30 with five minutes to play, but Lucas sparked the Vulcans on a 16-6 run that saw them hit 4-of-6 3-pointers--three of which came from Lucas.
• Millersville trailed 46-37 at the half but outscored the Vulcans 9-2 over the first three minutes of the second half, cutting the deficit to 48-46. But Cal U found a way to counter every time Millersville made a run and came right back by scoring six-straight points. Millersville pulled within three at 59-56 with 12 minutes left on a 3-pointer from
Khari Williams and again one possession later with a
James Sullivan jumper, but Millersville could not get the stop it needed to tie the game.
• Leading 63-60 with 10:10 to go, Cal U received nine points from Collins in a four-minute stretch to extend the lead to 12 points. During that run, Cal U outscored the Marauders 11-2. Millersville got no closer than eight the rest of the way.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

POSTGAME REACTION FROM COACH CASEY STITZEL
• On how Cal U held off Millersville's runs: "Today is the first game where we didn't defend well. We missed some bunnies at the rim. We have to get better with compounding mistakes. We make a mistake on O and then make one on D. We have to be more consistent within the 40 minutes. Too many mental mistakes to beat good teams on the road. I think we need a little break mentally. We haven't had that game where all the pistols are firing."
• On the play of Nwosu and Ested: "Those two guys were good. Jaden was in foul trouble and Mekhi got hurt. Jahme stepped in and did a good job. That will strengthen our bench for when we play those three games a week in PSAC East play."
• On getting a break until Dec. 31: "The biggest issue is that we are putting too much pressure on ourselves. We are putting too much on the results rather than the process of being good. The break will help us refocus and not overthink things. Every team has that stretch. It wasn't all bad this semester but we have a lot of room for improvement."
NOTES
• Sunday's game was Millersville's first trip to Cal U since 2016. Millersville is now 12-9 all-time against Cal U.
• Millersville is now 1-3 when opponents score 80 or more points.
UP NEXT
• Millersville is off until Dec. 31 when it plays a rescheduled home game against Penn State Brandywine.
