MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Millersville women's basketball dropped its home opener on Wednesday night to the visiting Chestnut Hill Griffins, 66-45. This loss marked the first time in history the Marauders have fell to the Griffins, with the series moving to 4-1, still in favor of 'Ville.
The Marauders got off to a good start in the first 10 minutes of play, outscoring the Griffins 13-12 behind
La'Shyra Williams' seven first-quarter points. However, Chestnut Hill would turn on the gas entering the second quarter of play, outscoring Millersville 17-8 to hold an eight-point advantage going into halftime.
The second half was all Griffins, as they outscored Millersville 37-24 to come away with their second win of the season, dropping the Marauders just below .500 at 1-2.
Despite the loss, a couple young Marauders turned heads with their play off the bench. Freshman,
Alyssa Rodriques provided nine points, four rebounds, and two steals in 21 minutes for Head Coach
Sharay Hall.
La'Shyra Williams also tallied nine points and two steals to go along with six rebounds in 17 minutes. Millersville standout,
Lauren Lister, had six points and four rebounds in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Millersville came out with the edge, holding Chestnut Hill to only 12 first-quarter points and ending with a one-point advantage. Ten of the 13 Marauder points in the quarter were in the paint, and four of them were off turnovers.
• The Griffins would find their stride in the second quarter of play, scoring 13 of their 17 points off Marauder turnovers and seven off second chances on the offensive end.
•Chestnut Hill would pull away in the third, going on a 7-0 run midway through the quarter led by Emily Chmiel, who had four points during the run.
• The fourth quarter was more of the same, Millersville provided a couple encouraging moments but none enough to break what was already a 17-point deficit coming into the quarter.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Rodriques and Williams led the team in scoring with nine points each.
• Lister scored six points and grabbed four boards.
Emily Chmiel led the Griffins with 18 points and six rebounds in 27 minutes off the bench.
• Millersville was outrebounded 42-33 on the night.
• The Marauders forced 24 turnovers, matching their total from last week's win over Shaw.
• Chestnut Hill shot almost perfect from the charity strike, converting 13 of their 15 free throws in the win.
• The Marauders shot just under 50% from the line, going 7-15.
