No. 21 Kutztown tops Millersville

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - No. 21-ranked Kutztown inched closer to a PSAC East title Saturday by smothering the Millersville offense early and taking advantage of field position in a 30-7 win.

Kutztown (8-1, 6-0 PSAC East) passed for just 46 yards and out-gained Millersville (2-7, 1-5 PSAC East) a mere 262-222, but Millersville miscues included a safety allowed and three interceptions--one of which was returned for a touchdown. Kutztown started four drives in Millersville territory and needed more than 40 yards to score only one of its three offensive touchdowns. Millersville's best starting field position the entire game was its own 38. Four times, the offense started inside its own 11.

Zaire Jones led Kutztown with 117 rushing yards on 15 carries, averaging 7.8 per tote. Millersville finished with 32 net rushing yards. Jaheim Morris led the team with 28.

Jack Stagaard became the fourth different Millersville quarterback to start a game this season, and he drew a tough first assignment as Kutztown ranked second in the PSAC in scoring defense. Stagaard finished 16-of-30 for 190 yards and led a touchdown drive for the second week in a row, but Antaun Lloyd picked him off twice, and Justin Harris intercepted another.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Kutztown punted on its first possession, and Millersville started on its own 20 but mistakes started quickly. A bad snap moved Millersville to the 11, and Stagaard was sacked in the end zone on third down for a safety. Following the kick, Kutztown started on its own 40 and ran the ball on seven of eight snaps to cap the drive.
• Millersville ran three offensive plays on five of its first six drives and had just one first down and seven yards of offense at the half. Kutztown scored on a 33-yard drive just before the close of the first half. Millersville opened the third quarter promisingly. Stagaard connected with Christan Drayton to the Kutztown 33 for a 38-yard gain, and the Marauders reached the 28 before Lloyd picked off Stagaard at the 23. Kutztown turned that turnover into seven more points with a 12-play, 80-yard drive.
• The pick six on the first play of the fourth quarter made the score 30-0. Millersville got on the board with 2:21 remaining following a 16-play, 89-yard drive that included Stagaard completing six passes and rushing for 14 yards. Freshman Timmy Smith busted over the goal line from the 1-yard line on fourth-and-goal.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Stagaard completed 15-of-24 passes in the second half.
• Drayton totaled three catches for 50 yards. Tight end Eli Workinger caught three passes for 47 yards. Hakim Melvin also made three catches while being targeted a team-high seven times.
Rafael Lozada led Millersville's defense with 11 tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack. Chase Alisauckas recorded 1 1/2 sacks and 2 1/2 tackles for loss. Millersville finished the game with four sacks.
