Millersville falls to West Chester in overtime, 1-0

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Millersville fell just short of their fourth straight win Saturday afternoon, dropping their second to last home match to West Chester, 1-0.

Millersville (9-5, 5-4 PSAC East) held the Golden Ram offensive to virtually no chances on the offensive end in the first half of play. The Marauders would however not create many chances of their own, with only four shots total in the first 45 minutes. The Golden Rams had the best look on goal of the half in the 36th minute of play. Doug Goitia saw an opening in the bottom right corner of the 'Ville net and fired a shot in that would be stopped by a diving Bobby Bosch. The fantastic save would keep the game locked at zero heading in to the half.

West Chester (7-2-2, 7-2-1 PSAC East) saw more chances than Millersville in the second half, outshooting the Marauders 5-3. Their best chance came in the 70th minute of play from Andrew Markopoulos, when the defender ripped a shot in on goal but Bosch was there again with another terrific save to keep the match tied. The best chance of the night for Millersville came at the end of regulation as Matt Lynch escaped on a breakaway with less than three seconds to go and sent a shot into the back of the Golden Ram net. However, the goal was sent in just after time had ran out sending the game to overtime.

The first seven minutes of overtime were fueled by defense, as no shots were taken. West Chester finally got a chance to put the ball into the Marauder box and capitalized. Goitia poked a loose ball to teammate Austin Eveland for a golden goal in the 97th minute of play, ending the match in a heartbreaking loss for Millersville.

Despite the loss Millersville is still sitting at No. 3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East standings, which good enough to punch a postseason ticket for the Marauders. With three games left they are in a standoff with Bloomsburg for the final spot, who currently sits a half-game behind them. Bloomsburg visits Millersville for the last match of the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. at Pucillo Field.

'VILLE HIGHLIGHTS
Bobby Bosch provided a couple highlights for Millersville despite the loss, making two huge saves at the end of each half to keep the score tied and sending it to overtime.

POST GAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON
Overall thoughts on the match: "I thought it was a really good game of soccer by two very strong teams. It was likely to come down to an individual moment at some point to decide the game and that's what happened. We should some indecision in a bad area and got punished for it. We played well and did not really deserve to lose the game, but then again, neither did West Chester. I was happy with our overall application and effort, but we just need to create those decisive moments for ourselves in these close games."

On the play of keeper Bobby Bosch: "Bobby was good today. He certainly came up with a few really good saves when needed and I am sure he is not happy with the way the game ended, the same as all of us. There is plenty to still achieve though and we will be looking forward to our next game."
