MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Men's soccer earned their fourth win in their last five games over Shepherd on Saturday night, defeating the Rams 4-0 on the road.
Millersville (10-5, 6-4 PSAC East) was held to no goals in the first half of play, despite firing six shots the Rams' way. The Marauder defense was also able to hold Shepherd to a scoreless first half, as the Rams failed to take a single shot.
The 'Ville offense erupted in the second half of play for four scores, and all within the span of six minutes.
Mike Kreider got the action started in the 66' of play, scoring an unassisted goal to put Millersville up 1-0. Four minutes later
Spencer Shortt found
Aaron Maynard in the box for a header that gave 'Ville a two-goal lead.
Ronnie Minges Would strike less than 20 seconds later off an assist from
Anthony Calamia.
Frank Astarita would finish the scoring off for the Marauders with a goal in the 72' off an assist from
Jakob Braman.
Millersville is still sitting at No. 3 in the
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East standings, which good enough to punch a postseason ticket for the Marauders. With two games left they are in a standoff with Bloomsburg for the final spot, who currently sits a half-game behind them. Bloomsburg is scheduled to visit the Marauders at Pucillo Field for the last game of the regular season. However, Millersville beat Bloomsburg earlier this season, so a victory over East Stroudsburg next Wednesday, Nov. 3 would clinch a 'Ville playoff birth.
POST GAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON
•
Overall thoughts on the match: "We played very well for most of the game. We should have scored a few goals in the first 15 minutes but then lost a bit of rhythm in the later part of the first half. For most of the game though we moved the ball well and defended with a good press so while there were times we could have done better, overall it was a satisfactory day."
•
On what went right in the second half: "Mainly we executed our combination work much better. We got too anxious late in the first half so we took a deep breath at half time, reminded ourselves of what we needed to do to bring success then trusted in that process. Once a goal went in the whole nature of the game changed as we expected it would. It was good to see the ruthlessness and put the game beyond any doubt quickly."
•
On the upcoming match: "Wednesday is a huge game for us and in essence it is our first playoff game. It's a simple formula, win and we are in the playoffs. We will be doing everything we can to be ready and then it will all come down to the execution on the day."
