Marauders baseball splits frigid February doubleheader with Goldey-Beacom

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Millersville baseball team earned a doubleheader split with Goldey-Beacom College in frigid 39-degree February temperatures on Saturday afternoon. The Marauders dropped game one 7-1 but bounced back with a 12-3 win in game two. Millersville's overall record in 2020 is now 8-3.

Graduate student Gavilan Fogarty-Harnish pitched the entire second game to earn his team-leading third win of the season. The game ended in the seventh inning due to darkness, but Fogarty-Harnish was the only pitcher Millersville used--tossing six innings, giving up two earned runs on seven hits, and striking out five.

The Millersville bats were ice cold in game one but warmed up significantly in game two. Jimmy Cain knocked in four RBIs, including a two-out double in the fourth inning that plated Cole Friese and Jimmy Losh to give the Marauders a comfortable eight-run lead.

The scene now shifts to Cooper Park in Millersville for another doubleheader tomorrow afternoon beginning at noon.

GAME ONE (GOLDEY-BEACOM 7, MILLERSVILLE 1)
• The Lightning scrapped together two unearned runs in the first inning and added two more runs in the second off of Millersville starting pitcher Drew Miller to take control of game one. Miller gave up five earned runs in 4 1/3 innings pitched and struck out six.
• The Marauders only managed three hits off of Goldey-Beacom starter Jake Heskett, who tossed five solid innings and finished with five strikeouts.
• Jimmy Losh continued his hot streak at the plate, singling twice and knocking in Nick Mancuso in the fifth inning for the Marauders' only run of the game. Eric Callahan also doubled in the fifth for the only other Millersville hit in the game.

GAME TWO (MILLERSVILLE 12, GOLDEY-BEACOM 3)
• The Marauders wasted no time getting back on track and started off the game with a five-run first inning. Eric Callahan led off the game with a single and Jimmy Losh was hit by a pitch to put two men on. Cole Friese dropped a bunt down the third base line to load the bases. Millersville took advantage of a fielding error at third base on a Luke Trainer grounder to bring home Callahan, then added a run on a Jimmy Cain fielder's choice. Freshman Darin Miller singled to right center to plate Friese and a two-out double from Manning Brookens brought in Cain and gave the Ville a five-run lead.
• Millersville's offense sprang to life again in the fourth inning. Chase Simmons and Jimmy Losh singled to put two men on, Losh stole second base, and Simmons scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-0. After a Friese walk and a stolen base of his own, Jimmy Cain smashed a 2-run double down the left field line to clear the bases.
• The top of the fifth was a messy one for the Goldey-Beacom defense and the Marauders were able to tack on more insurance runs. Corey Woodcock drew a walk and advanced to third on a wild pitch before a Losh sacrifice fly brought him home. Luke Trainer drew a bases-loaded walk later in the inning and another wild pitch allowed Eric Callahan to score to give Millersville an 11-run lead.

POST-GAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH JON SHEHAN
• On Jimmy Losh and his early-season success: "He has very mature at-bats and hits a ton of barrels. It's been a lot of fun to see because it seems like he's always on time and it's almost like he knows what's coming. It's a great sign of adjustability in his swing."

• On the tough weather conditions and Gavilan Fogarty-Harnish's game two performance: "The whole day today was a struggle. The conditions were a factor but we need to make adjustments on the mound and we didn't do that in game one. In game two, Gavilan went out and battled. We scored five runs in the first and he was probably sitting in the dugout for a half-hour. It was tough for him to go back out and find a feel for the ball, especially with the temperatures as low as they were today. All in all he did a pretty good job."

• On what still needs to be worked out early on in 2020: "It's funny, I think we've started five or six different people in left and right field. Today was Chase Simmons and he swung the bat well and put together some good at-bats. So did Corey Woodcock. It's one of those things where you keep putting guys in and allowing them to figure things out, and I hope that will help me to figure things out from a lineup perspective."

• On preparing for tomorrow's doubleheader: "We have the mentality that we have to be tougher than the other club. We're looking forward to playing home games. We have a stocked bullpen and two really good starters ready to go, so we're excited."

INSIDE THE BOX SCORES
• Eric Callahan and Jimmy Losh both finished the day with three total hits spread across both games.
• Millersville's speed was again on display as Losh stole three bases between the two games while Cole Friese and Chase Simmons each added one steal in game two. Losh leads the team with seven steals in eight attempts, while Friese and Eric Callahan are tied for second on the team with four steals apiece.
• Darin Miller and Jimmy Cain were both 2-for-4 in game two with a run scored.

NOTES
• Freshman Darin Miller's seven-game hit streak came to an end in game one, although he drew two walks in the game and has now reached base in nine consecutive contests.
• Jimmy Cain's four RBIs today give him 10 RBIs for the season, the third-highest total on the team. Luke Trainer leads the Black and Gold with 13 RBIs and Darin Miller is just one behind with 12.

UP NEXT
• The Marauders and the Lightning play another pair of games beginning on Sunday, March 1 at 12 p.m. at Cooper Park on the campus of Millersville University.
