MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville wrestling team hits the road to Erie, Pa. and Mercyhurst University to compete on Saturday, Feb. 29 in the 2020 NCAA Division II Super Region 1 Championships. Six Super Regions hold tournaments, with the Top 3 finishers in each weight class advancing to the NCAA Division II National Championships. Last season, the Marauders advanced two wrestlers (Shane Ruhnke and Colton Dull) to nationals, with Ruhnke winning the Division II national championship at 165 pounds.
Wrestling begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with the championship matches and consolation finals scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
The other teams competing in Super Region 1 include the seven other PSAC Division II wrestling teams (East Stroudsburg, Gannon, Kutztown, Mercyhurst, Pitt-Johnstown, Seton Hill, and Shippensburg) along with Fairmont State, Alderson Broaddus and American International. Last season the Marauders finished in sixth place in the team standings.
BRACKET-BY-BRACKET
125: Millersville freshman Devin Flannery enters his first Super Regional as the third-ranked wrestler in the region. He has won 10 of his last 12 matches and is 14-5 overall this season. The region's number one-ranked wrestler, Brendan Howard from Pitt-Johnstown, defeated Flannery 8-6 on Nov. 16 of 2019. Flannery did not wrestle the number two-ranked wrestler (Gannon's Jacob Dunlop.) Flannery wrestles Seton Hill's Frank Bonura in his first bout
133: Freshman Jacob Lehman enters the 133-pound bracket on a two-match winning streak and faces Seton Hill's Vincent Distefanis in the preliminary round.
141: Sophomore Ryan McGuire (14-10 overall record) placed fifth at last year's Super Regional and looks to improve upon it. He is ranked second in the region behind only Jacob Ealy from Pitt-Johnstown, who defeated McGuire by a 6-2 decision earlier in the season. He and Ealy are on opposite sides of the bracket, and Ryan wrestles AIC's Raul Mateo in the first round of action.
149: Freshman Elijah Tuckey is 9-7 this season and has won five of his last seven matches but faces a tough test in his first bout against top-seeded Chris Eddins Jr. of Pitt-Johnstown.
157: Brandon Connor's freshman campaign has earned him a 12-10 record so far and a No. 4 ranking in Super Region 1. Connor wrestles Pitt-Johnstown's Jacob Burgette in a preliminary round.
165: Another Millersville freshman, Jarrett Feeney, takes a No. 4 regional ranking into Saturday's tournament. Feeney has won five of his last six matches and has earned two falls and one major decision this season. Feeney received a first-round bye and faces Alec Shaw of Seton Hill in his first bout of the tournament.
174: Sophomore Malik Jackson has wrestled more matches (25) than any other Marauder in 2019-2020. He is ranked sixth in the region and did not compete in last year's Super Regional. Jackson must face top-seeded and unbeaten Michael Raccioppi of East Stroudsburg.
184: Senior Evan Morrill enters the Super Regional with a No. 4 ranking and plenty of motivation after finishing in fourth place at last year's tournament, just one spot away from a trip to Nationals. Morrill has won five of his last seven matches and wrestles Gannon's Joel Leise in his first bout of the tournament.
197: Sophomore Reece Muldoon got a late start to this season but has a 4-2 overall record, including wins in three of his last four matches. Muldoon is the third Marauder matched up against a top seed in the first round and must face Mercyhurt's Luke McGonigal to kick off the 197-pound bracket.
285: Millersville sophomore captain Josh Walls did not compete at last year's Super Regional and enterd the brackets with a No. 4 regional ranking. Walls has earned 14 victories this season, including four falls, two technical falls and two major decisions. Walls has wrestled close matches with the wrestlers ranked above him (Kutztown's Andrew Dunn at No. 1, Mercyhurst's Jacob Robb at No. 2, and Seton Hill's Jake Beistel at No.3.) but did lose to all three by decision late in 2019. Walls is in the top half of the bracket (with top seeded Andrew Dunn) and wrestles AIC's Alex Britos in the preliminary round. A potential matchup with Pitt-Johnstown's Allan Beattie looms in the quarterfinals if Walls gets past Britos. Walls defeated Beattie 3-1 in their previous match back on Nov. 16, 2019.
