MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - For the third consecutive game, Millersville's opponent had the ball with a chance to extend or win the game. But on Wednesday in Lock Haven, Millersville got the stop it needed for an 83-80 victory, snapping the Bald Eagles' four-game winning streak.
After losing on buzzer beaters in each of the previous two games, Millersville held a one-point lead when sophomore
Justin Nwosu stepped to the free throw line with 18 seconds left. Nwosu swished both, and Millersville forced Matt Cerruti into a deep, contested 3-pointer that missed in the closing seconds.Â
Millersville got back to .500 (8-8, 6-6 PSAC) with the win. Eight of the Marauders' last 11 games have been decided by five points or fewer. Millersville has won four of the last six with the two losses coming by a total of two points.Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
•
Mekhi Hendricks scored a career-high 22 points and Nwosu added 19, and the much of their damage was done in the final 13 minutes as Millersville rallied from seven points down. Hendricks scored 11 and Nwosu added nine, including his game-clinching free throws.Â
• Millersville led 40-37 at the half, but Lock Haven opened the second on a 3-pointer from Christian Kelly and opened a seven-point lead with a 20-10 run over the next seven minutes. But over the final 13 minutes, Millersville out-scored the Bald Eagles 36-25, hitting 13-of-25 shots from the field, three threes and 7-of-7 free throws. On the defensive end, Millersville held Lock Haven without a three and forced five turnovers.Â
• Millersville's comeback was started by a Hendricks' drive for two.
Ryan Davis, who finished with 17 points, added back-to-back scores to cap an 8-0 run that put Millersville back in front. Over the next eight-plus minutes, the lead changed hands seven times and stood tied nine times. It wasn't until
Khari Williams dropped a 3-pointer for a 79-76 lead with 1:35 left that Millersville claimed the lead for good. Lock Haven pulled within one twice, but Williams answered with a jumper once, and Nwosu's clutch foul shots, which came off of an offensive rebound, kept the Marauders in front.Â
Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCOREÂ
• After scoring 10 total points in his previous six games, Davis has averaged 16.7 over his last three. He made 7-of-12 shots Wednesday night, made three threes and also grabbed a career-high eight rebounds.Â
• Hendricks made 8-of-13 shots with a career-best 5-of-7 shooting from three to top 20 points for the first time in his career. Nwosu scored in double figures for the seventh consecutive game.
• Millersville shot 12-of-12 from the free throw line.Â
POSTGAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH CASEY STITZEL
•
On the rallying back to win close: "In a timeout we reminded the players to keep making positive plays. We've talked about the bad stretches in the second half that we've had. Tonight, we punched right back. At the start of the half we weren't making smart plays--dribble off our foot, throw the ball out of bounds. We needed to make Lock Haven beat us and not give them points."
•
On the performance of Hendricks: "IÂ thought it was his best game of the year. He guarded, got six rebounds, got two lose balls. did the little stuff. The scoring will come. Tonight he did a good job of scoring, facilitating for others and doing all the dirty work."Â
•
On the continued development of Ryan Davis: "He is super talented. He was one of my two or three favorites players to watch in recruiting since I've been here. I fell in love with his skill set. At this level it is hard to find 6-7 guys who can shoot it, dunk it and drive by you. He continues to get better on defense and with his rebounding. He has quite a future."
•
On the team's resiliency: "We talked for about 30 minutes before practice on Monday. We have to change the story--the narrative that 'oh, Millersville was so unlucky this year.' This is one of my favorite groups because they don't give up. They are getting better. They play hard and play for each other. The Millersville community should be proud of them for fighting through adversity. A lot of teams all across the country have had bad luck like us and given up but not these guys."
