Davis ignites Marauders in second half; Millersville rolls past Mansfield

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Millersville University redshirt freshman Ryan Davis scored 20 points in the second half including eight in a row to start a 20-0 run that helped Millersville to an 84-57 runaway road victory at Mansfield Saturday.

Davis has been a revelation for the Marauders lately. Playing more minutes in place of the injured Caden Najdawi, Davis has scored at least 13 points in each of the last four games, and against Mansfield, he scored 20 for the second time in three games. Davis hit 7-of-10 shots from the field and drilled 4-of-6 from three. Millersville held the home team to just 24 points in the second half and Davis was a big reason why. He blocked two shots and recorded two steals in the second half.

Not to be outdone was James Sullivan, who finished with 23 and carried the Marauders on offense early, scoring 13 in the first half. Mekhi Hendricks also played a significant role in the Marauders pulling away. He followed Wednesday's 22-point effort with 21 against the Mountaineers. He shot 4-of-7 from three and made his first four attempts.

The win boosted Millersville back above .500 to 10-9 (7-6 PSAC) and was its fifth win in the last seven games, with both of those two losses coming by one point on buzzer beaters. The 27-point margin of victory was Millersville's largest since Nov. 18, and since starting 0-6 on the road, Millersville has won three of four.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Mansfield made it a game by closing the first half on an 11-0 run, tying the score at 33 going into the break. But with 13:48 left in the game, Davis drilled a 3-pointer, scored eight in a row and 10 of Millersville's points in a 23-1 run over the next 4:30. Millersville made eight-straight shots including all five threes and both foul shots. Sullivan scored eight and Hendricks added five in that stretch. While the Marauders were red-hot on the offensive end, fueling it was their defense. The Marauders held Mansfield without a field goal for more than five minutes.
• Millersville out-scored Mansfield 51-24 in the second half and scored 43 of those points starting with Davis' 3-pointer. All of Davis' points came in less than 14 minutes.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Millersville limited Mansfield to 33.3 percent shooting in the second half and 34.5 percent in the game. The Mountaineers made their final three 3-pointers of the first half but made just two of the rest of the game. Millersville shot 55.9 percent from the field in the second half and finished at 49.2. The Marauders also tied a season-high with 11 3-pointers for the second consecutive game.
• Sullivan topped 20 points for the first time in six games and matched a season-high with nine field goals made.
Justin Nwosu made 6-of-12 shots for 12 points, putting him in double-figures for the eighth consecutive game.
• Millersville blocked five shots and totaled nine steals. Four steals came from Sullivan and three came from Hendricks.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH CASEY STITZEL
On the second half run: "In the first half we let them go on a run at the end. We weren't taking good shots and turned over the ball. At halftime, even with Caden (Najdawi) and Jaden (Faulkner) not playing, I hardly had to say a word. We had peer-to-peer leadership from (Najdawi and Faulkner), and that was great. In the second half, we got into transition, played more aggressively, denied the elbows and rebounded. Multiple guys played well with confidence. The defense fueled the offense."
On the defensive improvements: "Just being more aggressive. We trapped it a little bit, and got some turnovers right away and set the tone. We have to get out in the passing lanes and bother teams. We did that in the second half. We have to be a defensive team that shares the ball on offense gets multiple guys scoring. We had four in double figures today."
On the progress of Hendricks and Davis: "There's a hundred disadvantages to having players like (Faulkner and Najdawi) out, but that's the one advantage--guys get put into new roles during this stretch and they can grow. Guys are stepping up. Ryan didn't have a great first half but a big part of his development is to be able to get that going during the game and not just have a bad game because he had a bad start. Mekhi has been making the right plays and playing well on defense."

NOTES
• Hendricks has made 9-of-14 threes in his last two games.
• Davis has averaged 17.5 points per game over his last four and has made 10 of his last 20 3-pointer attempts.

UP NEXT
• After playing four of five on the road, Millersville returns to Pucillo Gymnasium on Wednesday, Jan. 29 for a 7:30 p.m., tip against West Chester.
