MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – As the opening of the 2020 baseball season draws near, the Millersville University baseball program has announced the signing of three pitchers that will join the team this fall in preparation for the 2021 campaign. The trio includes Colby Gromlich (Hamburg), Conor Cooke (Neumann Goretti), and Zack Tukis (Cumberland Valley).
Millersville enters the 2020 season as the defending PSAC East champions after a stellar 23-5 division record. The title was the program's sixth since the 2011 season. Gromlich, Cooke, and Tukis join nine other incoming recruits that will replenish the Marauders' roster for next season after the expected graduation of eleven players from this spring's roster.
Head coach Jon Shehan is excited to add three more exceptional student-athletes to the pitching staff.
"The arms in this group are all guys that fit the Marauder mold. They are all team-first people with fantastic work ethics. Second, they are quality students that value their education. And third, they are big, athletic young men with good arm actions. All three of them hunger for improvement. They were looking for a place in which development is a huge priority. Our culture of development has created a niche for us from a recruiting aspect. Conor, Colby, and Zack wanted a place that they could earn a degree that would help them professionally, play baseball for a program that wins, and have an individual development plan that is current and forward-thinking. We are excited to get them on the bump next fall!"
Colby Gromlich
RHP | 6-3 | 210 | R/R
Hamburg Area High School
Why Millersville? "I chose Millersville because I felt it would be the best fit for me. I loved the campus facilities and wanted to be a part of the baseball program and school. I felt that I fit in the best at Millersville."
Academic Interest: Undecided
Shehan on Gromlich: "Colby can flat out pitch. He's ultra-competitive. The scary thing is that the raw stuff is just starting to catch up with the ability to locate and change speeds. It is usually the other way around. We typically find guys with arm speed and try to teach them how to pitch. He has a great feel for game management and how to get hitters out. He's a mid 80's guy now but we think he is going to add some serious velocity."
Goals: "Win and develop into a better student-athlete, student, and person. Leave a positive impact on the community."
Conor Cook
RHP | 6-1 | 165 | L/R
Neumann Goretti High School
Why Millersville? "I chose Millersville because of the family culture I experienced while I visited."
Academic Interest: Undecided
Shehan on Cook: "Conor can spin it. We saw some great raw spin rate this fall on his breaking ball that led us to believe that he is going to develop a top-end swing and miss breaking ball over the next couple of years. His delivery might be the cleanest of all seven arms in the 2020 class, which means we should be able to really push hard to see velocity gains early next fall. He can hit a little bit too—it wouldn't be the first time that an athletic arm came in and found a place with the bat. We will have to see how things pan out. Usually, when you recruit quality athletes, good things happen."
Goals: "Win a conference championship and to become the best player I can be."
Zack Tukis
RHP | 6-5 | 180 | R/R
Cumberland Valley High School
Why Millersville? "I wanted to pursue business administration but didn't want to study too far from home. I also like the modernized campus. Aside from that, Millersville has a very good baseball program."
Academic Interest: Business administration
Shehan on Tukis: "Zack has an incredible story. He is a true late bloomer that didn't make his high school team as a freshman. He now has a fastball that is impossible to ignore—touching 87 consistently. There are only a handful of high schools in the country that would now even think about cutting him. It's a testament to him wanting to better himself and then finding great people to work with. Will Kerr and Scott Swanson have helped him make amazing jumps in the past three years and he still has lots of room for growth in the future. Zack has a "walk-on" mentality, even though he is obviously recruited—and that is hard to develop. It's been that attitude that has made certain individuals in our program special."
Goals: "For the team, I want to bring a positive attitude to the program and learn from the older players. For myself, I'm looking to gain velocity and consistency on the mound."
