AMHERST, N.Y. - The Millersville University women's tennis team dominated its opening contest of the 2019-20 season, earning a 7-0 victory at Daemen College.
It was a solid start for a Marauders team looking to build off of a nine-win season the year prior, the most since the 2015-16 season.
A young Millersville team, not featuring a single senior on the roster, didn't drop a set to Daemen.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
•
Esperanza Contador opened her Marauder career with a solid effort. The Southwestern College transfer was paired with sophomore
Julie Wallace in flight one doubles. The new combo responded, winning 6-1. The duo of
Kelsey Heckert and
Victoria Hanus delivered the point with their 6-0 win in the No. 3 position.
• Contador delivered again in flight one singles, taking down Lena Gruber in a competitive match, 6-2, 7-5.
• Wallace faced a competitive match in flight two singles against Christina Stasiuk but prevailed, 6-3, 6-4.
• From there, the Marauders dominated.
Jasmine Morris took flight three singles 6-3, 6-1. Heckert won at flight four with a 6-0, 6-0 clean sweep. Freshman
Hannah Bryan's debut was a solid one, defeating Andrea D'Sa, 6-1, 6-1.
Maria Ojeda, another freshman, won in flight six with a score of 6-1, 6-0.
QUOTABLE
"That was a great start for the women, obviously," fourth-year head coach
Matt Helsel said. "It was nice for the new players to have a successful debut. We have a long journey ahead, though, so we don't have too long to celebrate."
NOTES
• Contador, Wallace, Bryan and Ojeda all earned their first wins in the black and gold. Contador is the only player out of the bunch that is not a freshman.
• The Marauders picked up where they left off last season. Millersville won six of their final eight regular-season matches and now open the 2019-20 season with a victory.
• The women's team didn't win a true road match until PSAC play last season (April 6, 2019). That match was a 6-1 victory at Kutztown.
• This was the third consecutive year the Marauders and Wildcats have met. Millersville has won the last two meetings while dropping just one point (6-1 victory in 2018-19, 7-0 victory in 2019-20).
UP NEXT
• It's a quick turnaround for Millersville, as they head to Rochester for a Sept. 8 matchup at Roberts Wesleyan College (1-0). The match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
