Marauders cruise in season opener, defeat Daemen 6-1

AMHERST, N.Y. - One season removed from grabbing the most team wins in nearly a decade, the Millersville University men's tennis team opened the 2019-20 campaign with a solid effort, defeating Daemen College, 6-1.

The Marauders' lineup featured just one senior in Jose Alcazar, who played in flight three doubles and flight six singles, but did not factor into the match.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• Frank Yanni and Rodrigo Lorencin got the Marauders off on the right foot in flight two doubles, snagging a 6-3 victory. Carlos Martinez-Lucas and Ben Fellman rounded out the point with a 6-3 victory in flight one.
• Martinez-Lucas, last season's PSAC Athlete of the Year, battled in a three-set marathon, eventually defeating Daemen's Fabian Wilde, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 10-5.
• Santiago Ramos won the first singles match of the season at flight five, defeating James Schaab-Rozbicki, 6-2, 6-2. Lorencin followed with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at flight four against freshman Phillip Vance.
• Ben Fellman, who won nine singles matches as a sophomore last season, cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory at flight three. Alcazar's singles match did not come to its conclusion because the Marauders had already clinched the match.

QUOTABLE
"I thought the men played great doubles today," said Matt Helsel, in his fourth year as head coach. "We have some areas we can improve certainly, but today was a good measuring stick on where we are."

NOTES
• Martinez-Lucas was pushed to three sets just four times last season, going 2-2.
• This was the second consecutive season the Marauders have defeated the Wildcats. They won last year's matchup, 7-0.
• Millersville did not win a match until March 7 last season at the University of the District of Columbia. It was their fifth match of the season.

UP NEXT
• The Marauders will face Roberts Wesleyan College for a Sept. 8 showdown. It is the opening match for the Redhawks. The match begins at 10 a.m.
