MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Millersville Marauders closed out the Wildcat Invite in Wilmington, Del. in style, coming from behind to defeat the Goldey-Beacom Lightning in overtime 2-1. It is the Marauders' first victory of the 2019 season after dropping the opener 5-1 to the host Wildcats on Thursday afternoon.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• Millersville almost took the lead in the 20th minute when senior
Jacob Gosselin surged ahead of the Goldey-Beacom defense and dropped the ball off to sophomore
Spencer Shortt. Shortt's shot skimmed just over the crossbar.
• For the second straight game, Millersville conceded a strange goal due to a turnover deep in their own territory. Goldey-Beacom's Nicolas Jaramillo collected the ball in the 28th minute and fed Alejandro Varela to give the Lightning the lead.
• The Marauders ratcheted up the offensive pressure and it paid off in the 73rd minute thanks to two freshmen.
Bob Hennessey was relentless in chasing down the ball... won it near the corner flag... slid it over to
Roger Buesmaill Jr. in the box... who calmly left-footed the equalizer into the net. It was the first assist for Hennessey and first goal for Buesmaill Jr. in their collegiate careers.
• The game went to overtime tied 1-1. Sophomore keeper
Brady Hochman essentially saved the game in the 94th minute.. coming off his line and diving to the ground to deny a one-on-one opportunity for Goldey-Beacom's Nicolas Jaramillo.
• With just 38 seconds to go in the first overtime, Millersville earned another chance thanks to consecutive corner kicks. The second fell to
Roger Buesmaill Jr. in the box and deflected off a Goldey-Beacom player's arm, earning a penalty kick.
• Junior defender
Nathan Maynard stepped up to the penalty spot and hammered the ball into the top right corner of the goal to win the game for the Marauders, 2-1.
POST GAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON
•Â
On today's defensive effort:Â "We spent a lot of time in the last 24 hours talking about and analyzing our defending, especially by the center backs. Everyone's defensive work improved today but I thought the back four were great and our center backs were fantastic. We showed great mental strength to come out today and trust the information we were providing to the players and they got their reward from trusting in our advice."
•Â
On the offensive pressure put on by the Marauders in the second half:Â "We started to play with more physicality and intensity but more importantly we started to stamp our authority on the game with what we were doing with the ball. We grew in confidence and started to pass the ball with much more composure and that's really where the game turned for us."
•Â
On the impact of today's come-from-behind victory:Â "The most rewarding thing we saw today was the growth of the team. We have so many young guys playing and seeing the individual and team growth was great today. I am extremely proud of their effort and belief. We still have a lot of work to do and a few important injured guys to get back but we turned an important corner today. We need to get back to work, enjoy our work and keep progressing forward."
