Buesmaill Jr. and Gosselin combine for goal; No. 16 Mercy College gets 4-1 win

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The No. 16 ranked Mercy College Mavericks handed Millersville its second loss of the season 4-1 at Pucillo Field on Saturday evening. It was the Marauders' first home game and there were plenty of bright moments in the game from many of Millersville's young players and veterans alike.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
•  Mercy College took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute thanks to a counterattack. Maximiliano Rebolledo-Camus threaded the ball to Santiago Corral, who took his time and put it home to give the Mavericks the lead.
•  Millersville goalkeeper Brady Hochman came up huge in the 28th minute to deny Corral a second goal from a one-on-one situation. Hochman squared up and dove down to his right to parry away Corral's first shot, got back up and forced Corral to try to chip the ball over him. It hit the post and deflected away with no damage done.
• The Mavericks led 2-0 at the break thanks to a Manuel Achondo goal from a corner kick, but there was a wild flurry of action at the beginning of the second half. Freshman Roger Buesmaill Jr. got his boot on a Mercy College pass in the 46th minute, stole possession, and ran free down the left wing. Cutting into the box, he slid the ball over for the sprinting Jacob Gosselin, who snuck it past the keeper to make it a one-goal game.
• Gosselin and the Marauders almost scored a second goal in the 59th minute. Gosselin launched it towards Mercy keeper Joel Serrano, forcing a desperate save, and the ball just barely missed falling right to the feet of Buesmaill Jr. and Matteo Adiletta for an easy tap in.

POST GAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON
• On some positives from tonight's game: "I thought we did some really good stuff at times. I thought we moved the ball really well. Thought we showed good composure early in the game. I think there's a lot of bright things to take from the game to build on as we go into PSAC play. Almost like it's our second preseason, it's all about preparing for the PSAC. If we can move the ball like we did today, defend like we did today, but do it over a 90 minute spell, I think we'll be in a good position."
• On the speed and performance of freshmen Roger Buesmaill Jr. and Bob Hennessey: "Pace is always something that's threatening and dangerous and very useful. Now it's about adding a little bit more quality and game intelligence to that pace. Hennessey can work all day and he's been a bright spot. Roger getting on the goal sheet is good with the assist. I think we're on the right path, what we need to do now is get the performance and get the results this week as we head into PSAC play and then we'll see where we get to."
• On the heavy minutes for most of the Marauders defense: "It's about building up stamina in those guys, they have to get used to it... lots of PSAC games where it's on the line right until the final whistle, so they have to build up their robustness to cope for 90 minutes. Especially as the weather gets a bit cooler. It's going to help in the long run."

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Senior Jacob Gosselin scored his second goal of the season to take the team lead in that department. He led the Marauders in shots with two, both on goal. Roger Buessmaill Jr., Spencer Shortt and Anthony Calamia all fired a single shot in the full 90 minutes.
• Buesmaill Jr. notched an assist on Gosselin's goal.
• In his second straight start, sophomore keeper Brady Hochman was called upon to make seven saves on Mercy College shots towards frame.

NOTES
• There was only one change from the starting XI compared to a week ago against Goldey Beacom; freshman Bob Hennessey earned a spot after assisting on the Marauders goal against the Lightning.
• The Marauders have scored exactly one goal in regulation in each of the first three games.
•  Tonight's Mercy College victory was the first time since 2004 the two teams had not played to a draw. With the loss the Marauders drop to 1-2-3 all-time versus the Mavericks.

UP NEXT
• The Marauders begin much-anticipated PSAC play on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 1:30 p.m. with a road match at Lock Haven University. Millersville defeated the Bald Eagles 1-0 in 2018.
