Liebl strikes late to defeat Jefferson, improve Marauders to 3-0

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. –  A scoreless draw was broken in the 89th minute by a Kay Liebl goal that sunk the hopes of host Jefferson University on Sunday afternoon and kept the Marauders unbeaten with a 3-0 record. Countless Marauder chances were defended desperately by the Rams all game, but Millersville's pressure finally cracked the code with just 21 seconds left in regulation.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
•  The first huge chance came for the Marauders in the 17th minute. Kay Liebl smashed a shot towards Jefferson keeper Erin Tinneny that was saved, but the ball fell right for Emily Tomlinson with nothing but an open goal in front of her. The slow rolling shot was just inches away from crossing the line when it was cleared off the line by a Rams defender.
•  The Marauders began to press the Rams in the second half, creating a slew of opportunities. Liebl took a corner kick in the 53rd minute that created a scrum in front of goal. The ball fell to the boots of Millersville players multiple times but Jefferson defenders were right there to block and clear the danger.
• In the 68th minute freshman Michelle Belcher's shot from the top of the box was dipping towards goal but substitute keeper Allie Bone was barely able to push it above the crossbar for the save.
• Belcher created another chance in the 74th minute, drawing a foul in the penalty box and earning a penalty kick. Liebl stepped up to the spot to take it but Allie Bone made the clutch save to keep the game scoreless.
• Millersville finally broke through in the 89th minute after relentless pressure to win the ball back. Savannah Rennix slid a beautiful through ball to Liebl in the box, who finally put the Marauders on the scoresheet with the game-winning goal.

POST GAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH MATT PROCOPIO
• On the halftime adjustments: "We need to be better technically, too many turnovers by a missed touch or pass. Our defense press was working well when we did not over commit or leave a mark open. At the half that was the focus. Very proud of how they responded and performed in the second half. It was great to find a late winner from our press."
• On the late goal: "Our continued press finally getting through in the final seconds was huge. Happy Kay was able to find the back of the net as she had been unfortunate. The goal was a reward of our efforts."
On this week's tough upcoming schedule: "We ended the week and our non-conference schedule on a positive note. We will enjoy this win and then immediately focus on our next game. It is key for us to manage our bodies this week since we're one day short on rest. As we look to prepare for Wednesday that will set the tone for the focus in trailing. One thing we did learn today is we can press teams if we want to."

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Kay Liebl and Michelle Belcher were launching shots all afternoon. Liebl led the Marauders with six shots, with Belcher just behind (five shots.) Lauren Downey, Emily Tomlinson, Kylie Sullivan and Morgan Winchock each shot once.
• Millersville outshot Jefferson 15-3 and held the corner kick advantage 7-3.
• The assist from Savannah Rennix was her second of the season.

NOTES
• The Marauders improve to 4-1 all-time versus Jefferson University. The 1-0 result in 2019 featured much less offense than last season's 6-0 Marauders victory.
Kay Liebl's goal now gives her 30 total in her career, just two away from tying all-time Marauders leader Becky Morris.
