KINGSVILLE, Texas - The incomparable career of Millersville University's Sunflower Greene concluded Saturday with a seventh-place finish in the shot put at the NCAA Division II Championships. Millersville sophomore Aliyah Striver finished in 23rd place in her first national championships.
Greene's 50-8 3/4 on her second attempt put her into the finals in sixth place. Greene hit 50-4 twice in her first three attempts, but she was unable to improve her standing. Ashland freshman Lindsay Baker posted a 54-1 1/4 on her first toss of the finals and that mark stood for the national championship.
"Both Aliyah and Sunflower were doing things well technically, just not putting it together with good power," said Millersville throws coach Brittany Hartman. "A lot of the other competitors threw very well."
Striver's season-best entering the championships was 48-8 1/4. Striver posted a 44-2 1/2 on her first attempt and then recorded a 41-5 and a 43-1 3/4 on her next two.
"I think this helps motivate Aliyah to keep working hard over the summer to come back better next year," said Hartman. "She really enjoyed getting the experience under her belt and seeing what it takes to be a competitor at this level."
Greene moves on from Millersville with an unmatched list of accomplishments. A two-time NCAA indoor shot put champion, Greene is a six-time All-American in the shot put and a three-time PSAC Athlete of the Year. She also owns all-time PSAC records in both indoor and outdoor shot put, the weight throw and hammer as well as championship records in all four events.
"Sunny has had an outstanding career as a Marauder and the coaching staff is very proud of all she has accomplished," said Hartman. "Becoming a two-time national champ and eight-time All-American is definitely not an easy task. It's been a pretty fun experience working with her and watching her grow personally and athletically."
