Slippery Rock, Pa. - Five-straight Slippery Rock goals in the span of less than one and a half minutes was the difference in the Millersville University women's lacrosse team's 8-7 road loss on Sunday afternoon. The Marauders were in control at halftime, leading 4-1, but Slippery Rock outscored Millersville 7-3 in the second half to earn the victory.
The Marauders (7-4, 5-2 PSAC) had their four-game win streak come to an end, while Slippery Rock (4-6, 3-4 PSAC) ends its two-game losing streak.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• The first goal of the game was not scored until the 17:51 mark of the first half when
Genevieve Speights scored her 22nd goal of the season. Slippery Rock would tie the game 30 second later, but Millersville scored three more in the half to build a three-point lead.
•
Sarah Leverentz's goal less than a minute into the second half extended the Marauder lead to four, but then the tables turned. Five different Slippery Rock players scored a goal from the 27:22 mark to the 26:07 mark to give Slippery Rock a 6-5 lead.
• Millersville scored the next two goals to retake the lead, but Slippery Rock responded with two goals of its own to take a lead it would not surrender. ShyAnne Toomer's second goal of the game with 7:57 left in the match proved to be the game-winner.
• The Marauders did have possession of the ball twice during the final two minutes, but they turned it over both times. The first turnover happened behind Slippery Rock's goal and the second turnover was a bad pass in front of Slippery Rock's goal with 30 second left on the clock.Â
COACH CINDY WILSON QUOTES
• "It was battle for the entire 60 minutes. We need to be able to control the things that we can control and not focus too much on outside factors."
• "They came out hard in the second half, and we had a little lapse which allowed them to go on a run. We need to use the lessons from this game and continue to move forward and grow. We have several important conference games left to play and can use this to help prepare for those."
