Marauders take series from Shippensburg

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - No. 28 Millersville clinched the series against Shippensburg with a 16-5 win in Saturday's opener, tying the 2016 club for the most runs ever scored by the Marauders against the Raiders. Millersville then polished off the series sweep with a 4-3, extra-inning win in game two.

Millersville (20-7, 7-1 PSAC East) has swept the season series with Shippensburg (11-14, 3-5 PSAC East) in each of the last two seasons and has won 10 games in a row over the Raiders.

GAME 1 RECAP (MILLERSVILLE 16, SHIPPENSBURG 5)
• Cordell Shannon improved to 4-0 in four starts against his hometown team, going five innings and striking out six while giving up four runs on seven hits. After 27 consecutive scoreless innings against Shippensburg, the Raiders finally scored off of Shannon in the bottom of the third.
• But by that time, the Marauders had already built a 5-0 lead. Millersville totaled 14 hits, drew eight walks and was hit by three pitches, scored at least one run in five of seven innings and put a runner on base in six of seven.
• Shippensburg also committed five errors, and the Marauders took full advantage of those miscues. Of the 12 runs allowed by starter Noah Inch, 10 were of the unearned variety. Two errors helped Millersville to a three-run second. Another in the third extended an inning for two more runs, and in the fourth, the Marauders scored seven following a fielding error to open the inning and a throwing error later. Millersville recorded five hits in the frame, with Ben Snyder, Dominic Hardaway and Eric Callahan all driving in runs.
• Kaylor Kulina reached base five times and scored three runs, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two walks. Hardaway drove in three and scored three times in a 2-for-4 performance. Eric Callahan went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Jimmy Cain added two hits and two RBIs. Cole Friese had two hits including a double.

GAME 2 RECAP (MILLERSVILLE 4, SHIPPENSBURG 3 (8 inn.)
• Entering the top of the sixth, Millersville trailed 3-0 and could not solve Shippensburg starter Michael Hope, who had allowed just three singles and struck out nine through five. But in the sixth, Millersville played small ball to perfection, and just like in game one, defensive miscues bit the Raiders. Kulina led off with a single, and Millersville's No. 3 and No. 4 hitters, Snyder and Hardaway, both put down bunts and both reached--Snyder on a single and Hardaway on an error. The throwing error allowed one run to score. Luke Trainer followed with an RBI ground out, and Jimmy Losh evened the score at 3-3 with a squeeze bunt.
• Shippensburg threatened to take the lead back in the bottom of the inning with two one-out singles. Aidan Welch came out of the bullpen and got the two outs he needed, leaving the bases full of Raiders.
• Millersville scored the go-ahead run in the eighth, and it again was aided by a Shippensburg error. Snyder started the inning by reaching on an error. Hardaway singled, and the pair pulled off a double steal. Trainer hit a sacrifice fly that brought Snyder home. Welch stayed on the mound in the bottom of the eighth and struck out the side.
• Kulina and Snyder both had two hits. Trainer drove in two of the team's four runs.
• Bobby Dorta started and gave up two runs in two innings. Daniel Ross logged 3 1/3 innings and did not give up an earned run and struck out five without a walk. Welch improved to 3-0 by pitching 2 2/3 scoreless.

WHAT COACH JON SHEHAN HAD TO SAY
• "Defense is a big thing. You have to catch the ball. If you don't give up free passes and make plays, it is hard to beat you in this league. We did well with that in game one."
• "Any time you can beat a PSAC East team four times in a row, you look back and circle that weekend. We were fortunate. The last game was a prime example. We were down three and and nothing was going our way at all. It's hard to play 28 innings of quality baseball against good baseball teams. There are no gimme weekends in the East."
• "Ross' fastball has been consistent at 95. He has plus fastball, and today he threw his off-speed for a strike. He has been really good his last three or four outings. He was a tough-luck loser last week, and this week, he came in with poise did a great job."
• "Welch is our guy late in the game. He loves that situation. The bigger situation, the closer in the game, The more amped-up he is to pitch. We trust him. He comes in in tough situations and his mentality is very consistent.
• "Shippensburg's starter was really good. To have Ben and Hardaway put away the big bats and put down bunts was pretty cool. We scored three runs and only hit one ball out of the infield. It was a lot of fun to watch."

NOTES
• Shannon has won six consecutive starts and moved into sole possession of second place on Millersville's career wins list with his 28th. Shannon moved into fourth on the all-time strikeout list with 225--10 shy of Chris Murphy and Matt Wagner's 235.
• Friese has reached base in all 27 games of the season. In addition to his two hits in game one, he singled and reached on an error in game two.
• Snyder extended his hitting streak to 21 games--the longest by a Marauder since Mitch Stoltzfus' 28-game streak in 2016.

UP NEXT
• Millersville is back at home on Friday, April 5 for a doubleheader with Kutztown starting at 1 p.m.
