MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The 24th-ranked Millersville University baseball team beat visiting Kutztown 4-1 in game one and 3-2 in game two for a PSAC East doubleheader sweep, running its winning streak to eight games.
The Marauders are now 22-7 (9-1 PSAC East) and in first place in the division. Kutztown's record dropped to 3-17 (2-8 PSAC East).
GAME 1 RECAP (MILLERSVILLE 4, KUTZTOWN 1)
•
Cole Friese and
Eric Callahan both had three hits. Friese stole two bases and drove in two runs while Callahan scored twice and stole a base. The duo had a hand in all four of Millersville's runs.
• Millersville broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when
Ben Harris doubled home Callahan. Friese followed with a two-out single for a 2-0 lead.
Nick Graham doubled in Callahan in the sixth and Friese singled in Graham two batters later.
•
Eli Nabholz pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up just one run on six hits and two walks while striking out five, but he battled to get that deep. In the second, Nabholz struck out Mike Villa swinging for the second out but a dropped third strike forced catcher
Nick Graham to throw to first. Base runner Nick Lafferty tried to sneak home from third, but
Ben Snyder fired a strike from first back to Graham, who tagged Lafferty to end the inning.Â
• The very next inning, a single, walk and hit batsman loaded the bases with two outs, but Nabholz struck out Lafferty to end the threat.
• With the Marauders leading 2-1, Kutztown loaded the bases in the sixth.
Tyler Yankosky, who had walked the first two batters he faced, stranded all three runners and preserved the lead with a full-count strike out and a pop up to third on another full-count pitch.
Andrew Mayhew pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for his second save of the season.
GAME 2 RECAP (MILLERSVILLE 3, KUTZTOWN 2)
• Millersville scored three in the second and that lead held up behind six strong innings from
Drew Miller (4-1) and a shutout seventh inning from
Aidan Welch. Miller gave up two unearned runs--both in the sixth. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.
• Back-to-back doubles from
Jimmy Losh and
Jimmy Cain started the Marauders' scoring. Callahan singled in Cain and Friese followed with another RBI single.
• The 3-0 lead remained until a pair of Marauder errors allowed two runs to score. Welch, however, pitched a perfect seventh for his first save of the season.
• Not only did Friese go 2-for-2 with a RBI, walk and stolen base, he also saved a run in the fourth with his defense. With two outs and two on in the fourth, Friese fielded a Villa single and cut down Zach Moretski at the plate.
WHAT COACH JON SHEHAN HAD TO SAY
• "It was a tail of two different pitchers today. Eli didn't have his best stuff but he battled. He made pitches when he had to.
Drew Miller made by far his best outing. He had two different breaking balls going, his velocity was good, he got ahead on everybody. Until the two errors, he was really, really good. Hopefully we can build on that for next week."
• "Getting out of the bases-loaded situations should be confidence for our pitchers. They can be successful when they don't have their best stuff. That was a positive although I would like us to not pitch ourselves into those situations as often. Our goal for this weekend was to attack their offense and not given them free bases."
• "We've are 12-guys deep so that if someone isn't swinging well, someone picks them up. It was good to see [
Jimmy Cain] hit the double off the wall because he is capable of a lot and just hasn't had a good first half. Hopefully he can get it going."
• "It's great to win the first two games of a series at home. We aren't going to look past tomorrow but it's nice to know you have a 2-0 lead in the series with
Cordell Shannon going in game three and
Daniel Ross getting his first start. We have a lot of bullpen arms left. We should be ready to go."
NOTES
• Nabholz won his 20th career game and his five strikeouts pushed his total to 228--just seven shy of the Millersville record.
• Friese has reached base in all 29 games of the season and has a hit in 12 in a row.
• Snyder's hitting streak ended at 22 games with his 0-for-3 game two. It is tied for the eighth-longest in PSAC history.
UP NEXT
• Millersville completes the series with Kutztown with a road doubleheader Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
