Glenville, W.Va. - Six years ago--the last time Millersville played Glenville State--Chris Murphy threw a no-hitter. On Saturday, the Marauders put another zero on the scoreboard, limiting the Pioneers to just five hits in a 9-0 rout that marked Millersville's sixth win in the last seven games.
Drew Miller (2-1) surrendered just two hits and two walks while striking out six in five innings. He then handed the ball to his bullpen. Five Marauders combined to work the final four innings, scattering just three hits with no walks while striking out five and preserving the shutout.
"Drew pitched like Drew," said Millersville head coach
Jon Shehan. "It was probably the first outing that he looked really comfortable. He threw four pitches for a strike. The bullpen is really confident. It was good to see
Tyler Yankosky in the second outing of the weekend. He held his velocity.
Daniel Ross was outstanding.
Noah Hartwell has quietly done a really good job. He's a nice change of pace. I was really happy with the way they threw altogether."
While Millersville totaled just six hits at the plate, they made each one count and took advantage of some Glenville State miscues. After a throwing error on a bunt try from
Cole Friese put
Kaylor Kulina and Friese on second
and third with no one out in the first,
Ben Snyder capitalized with a RBI single. Friese executed a squeeze play in the fifth, scoring
Christian Del Toro, who had led off with a double. Snyder followed with a run-scoring triple. The Marauders added another in the sixth when
Jimmy Cain walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Dominic Hardaway blew the game open in the ninth with a three-run homer--his third of the weekend.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Yankosky struck out two in the sixth before
Christian Wingard closed the inning with a strikeout of his own. Ross fanned two in the seventh. Hartwell worked a shutout eighth, escaping a two-on, one-out situation.
Alex Mykut closed the game in the ninth.
• The top four spots in Millersville's lineup accounted for five of six hits, all eight RBIs and seven of nine runs. Kulina went 2-for-4 with a walk, double and two runs. Friese scored twice and drove in a run. Snyder went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs. Hardaway's totaled four RBIs.
• Snyder recorded two hits in all three games of the weekend and totaled six RBIs. Hardaway drove in nine runs in the three games.
MORE FROM COACH SHEHAN
• "[Glenville State's] left-hander did a good job keeping us off balanced. Overall they did a good job."
• "[Snyder] went to the video this week and got back to some things he had success with in previous years. You have to love the way he self-coaches and leads from that aspect."
• "We made some adjustments after the Lander series. We had some confidence after last weekend. We played really well for 27 innings this weekend. There is a lot of confidence right now. We are doing things well that we expect to do well--pitch, play defense and situationally hit."
NOTES
• Millersville improved to 4-0 all-time against Glenville State, out-scoring the Pioneers 40-3 all-time.
