Trainer's five hits lead Marauders past Fairmont State

Glenville, W.Va. - Sophomore Luke Trainer hit a home run and singled four times, powering Millersville to a season-high 20 hits and a 14-4 win over Fairmont State Friday morning.

Millersville took the field Friday fewer than 12 hours after Thursday's game ended. The short rest had no effect on the Marauders' bats. One game after scoring 16 runs in an inning, the Marauders scored eight runs in the fifth inning against Fairmont State. Trainer's five hits were a career high and the home run was the first of his career. The outing extended his hitting streak to six games during which time he has gone 14-for-24 with 12 RBIs. Trainer drove in a team-high four runs. Seven other Marauders recorded two hits.

Trainer put the Marauders on the board with a solo homer to lead off the second. Millersville built a 3-0 lead before Fairmont State's Zach Musgrove hit a solo homer in the fourth. The Marauders got to starter J.t. Stegmaier (1-1) the third time through the lineup. Dominic Hardaway started the top of the fifth with a walk, and the next five Marauders and seven of the next eight recorded a hit. Millersville totaled eight runs on eight hits in the frame. Trainer had two of his hits in the inning.

Christian Del Toro came off the bench and hit a two-run home run--the first of his career--in the sixth. Trainer added his fourth RBI in the ninth.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Cordell Shannon (2-1) picked up the wn, giving up four runs on seven hits while striking out four in six innings. Kris Pirozzi fanned five in two shutout innings, and John Turner struck out two in a perfect ninth.
• After drawing six walks on Thursday, Kaylor Kulina went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Cole Friese, Ben Snyder, Eric Callaha ,Manning Brookens, Jimmy Cain and Jimmy Losh all had two hits. Snyder had two doubles and scored a team-high three runs.

FROM COACH JON SHEHAN
• "One you get through the lineup once or twice and you get a feel for how the starter is attacking you, you have to make an adjustment. Our guys have done a really good job of doing that the last couple of games. Hitting is contagious. The confidence level goes up when you see the guy in front of you have success."
• "Trainer has grown quite a bit. Zach Stone was in Maryland last week, and we looked at some video of Luke and discovered he was getting a little too wide at the plate. We shortened up his feet a little and it allows him to use his lower half. He swung the bat really, really well."
• "Our team feeds off the bullpen. They get excited for guys coming in out of the pen. We have a lot of confidence in our guys in the pen. It's fun to go to them right now. It is the first time in a few years that we have a deep bullpen. This is maybe the deepest we've ever been. Pirozzi sped up his delivery. Give our pitching coaches a little love on that one. He made an adjustment based on video and it got his delivery back in sync. Turner has shown signs of maturity for a guy who hasn't pitched much. I attribute that to his years of work behind the plate."

NOTES
• Millersville has 16 extra-base hits in the last two games. The last time Millersville had 20 or more hits in a game was on April 30, 2016 against Kutztown.
• In addition to Trainer's six-game hitting streak, Friese extended his to eight and Callahan stretched his to seven.
• Turner has struck out five of the last six batters he has faced.

UP NEXT
• Millersville caps its weekend in West Virginia Saturday at 12:45 p.m., against host team Glenville State.
