Lock Haven, Pa. - A jumper by
Lauren Lister with 2:52 left on the clock cut Lock Haven's lead to 59-57, but the Bald Eagles finished the game on a 7-0 run and went 5-for-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch to earn the victory. The Millersville University women's basketball team is now tied with Lock Haven for fourth-place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East standings, but the Bald Eagles hold the tiebreaker over the Marauders.
"We couldn't get the physical or mental edge in the fourth quarter that we needed to take the lead," head coach
Mary Fleig said. "We missed some free throws and shots that we normally make. They dictated the tempo and style of play."
Millersville (12-14, 9-10 PSAC) snapped a three-game win streak, while Lock Haven (14-12, 9-10 PSAC) completes its first season sweep of the Marauders since the 2014-15 season.
Lister scored a game-high 28 points, her 16th 20-point game this season, while pulling down four rebounds and notching three assists.
Olivia Mottern was second on Millersville with 14 points and totaled team highs with seven boards and three steals.Â
The Marauders held an early 13-8 lead, but the Bald Eagles went on a 17-5 run for the rest of the first quarter and shot 70 percent from the floor during that stretch. The Lock Haven offense went cold from there, totaling just 15 points between the second and third quarters, including just four in the second, which allowed Millersville to keep the game close.
A 3-pointer and subsequent layup by Mottern to start the final quarter gave the Marauders their first lead since the first quarter. It was a back-and-forth battle from there until the 7-0 run by the Bald Eagles that gave them the win.
Millersville turned the ball over just 13 times compared to Lock Haven's 17 turnovers, but the Bald Eagles held an 18-11 edge in points off turnovers. Lock Haven showed off its offensive depth in the game with 40 points from the bench, including a team-high 26 from Rileigh Devine, who notched all six of the Bald Eagles' 3-pointers, and 10 from Ahnera Parker.Â
"We let Rileigh Devine get too many open shots," Fleig said. "We didn't defend screens properly and had some issues in transition."
The opening and closing quarters featured most of the scoring in the game. Eighty-nine of the 123 points in this game came in the first and fourth quarters. While the Marauders outscored the Bald Eagles 19-15 between the second and third quarters, Lock Haven outscored Millersville 51-38 in the first and fourth quarters.Â
"We got some stops after the first quarter, but could not get our running game going," Fleig said. "We didn't have the same flow in the second half that we've had the last few games."
