Lister's historic night lifts Millersville past Shippensburg, 83-74

Shippensburg, Pa. - Lauren Lister has had many impressive games during her young Marauder career, but her 38-point performance in the Millersville University women's basketball team's 83-74 win at Shippensburg on Wednesday night is head and shoulders above the rest. Twenty-four of those points came during the second half, during which she shot 78.6 percent (11-for-14). Her 38 points is second most in program history in a single game, eclipsed only by Terri Gunder's PSAC record 48 points against Rowan University during the 1970-71 season.

"She kept looking to attack the rim and they couldn't find a way to stop her," head coach Mary Fleig said. "Lauren was relentless. She played with high intensity with her teammates throughout the whole game. Overall it was a really great game for her."

Millersville (10-13, 7-9 PSAC) completes its second-consecutive season sweep of the Raiders (11-13, 7-9 PSAC) who are now 5-9 at home this season.

Lister shot 64.3 percent (18-for-28) on the night, shattering her previous career high of 12 field goals. Along with her historic scoring performance, she added six rebounds, three assists and tied a season-high with five steals. Lister was not the only Marauder who had a career night; Courtney Dimoff scored a career-high 21 points and tied career highs in field goals (7) and 3-pointers (5). She shot 53.8 percent (7-for-13), including 55.6 percent (5-for-9) from beyond the arch, while grabbing three rebounds and notching four assists.

"Courtney also had a great game tonight," Fleig said. "She hit some big threes for us when we really needed them and was very consistent throughout both the first and second half."

The Marauders trailed at halftime, 34-30, but outscored Shippensburg 25-15 in the third quarter to turn the tide. The key for Millersville was stopping Marauder killer Ariel Jones, who had 22 points at halftime, but scored zero during the third quarter.

"Coming out of halftime our defense needed to stop Ariel Jones," Fleig said. "We made some adjustments, took the ball away from her and did a great job of covering her."

Millersville never trailed in the final quarter, although a layup by Kryshell Gordy made it a five-point game with 1:30 left on the clock. Lister responded with a layup of her own and from there the Marauders went 6-for-9 from the charity stripe to hold off Shippensburg.

"We did miss a few key free throws down the stretch," Fleig said. "But we did a good job of managing the clock and getting to the line."

Neither team held a lead larger than nine, and while Millersville (48.5) had a higher shooting percentage than the Raiders (41.4), Shippensburg held a 46-37 edge in rebounds. However, Fleig was pleased with her team's rebounding given some unfavorable matchups.

"We were outsized but really battled with them on the boards," she said. "I was pleased with the fact that we grabbed 12 offensive rebounds."

ADDITIONAL QUOTES
• "Considering we were just 1-4 on the road in conference games before this stretch of four-straight PSAC East games, we're really pleased to win tonight and take three of these four games."

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Olivia Mottern's streak of consecutive free throws ended tonight at 21. That is the third-longest streak in program history, only eclipsed by Amy Gipprich's 25 from 1981-82 and Karen Armold's 30 from 1988-89. Mottern also scored nine points, grabbed five rebounds and registered one assist.
• The Marauders held an edge in points off turnovers (22) and second chance points (16), while the Raiders held an edge in points in the paint (48) and fast break points (10).
• Millersville turned the ball over just 12 times compared to Shippensburg's 17 turnovers.
• Kendra Bamberger pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, the 12th time this season she has led the team in boards. She also tallied a game-high five assists, one shy of her career high.
• Catherine Copeland came off the bench to pull down six rebounds and notch two blocks, the sixth multi-block game of her career.

NOTES
• The Marauders have won four of their last five games and are now in a three-way tie for fourth place in the PSAC East with Shippensburg and Lock Haven. Millersville holds the tiebreaker over the Raiders, but lost against the Bald Eagles earlier this season. The Marauders will have a chance for redemption when they travel to Lock Haven on Feb. 23.
• Millersville has now won four-straight games against Shippensburg, including six of the last 10 games at Heiges Field House. The Marauders improve to 13-15 all-time at Shippensburg.

UP NEXT
• Millersville returns home to host the top team in the PSAC East, Bloomsburg, on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. in Pucillo Gymnasium. Three of the Marauders' final four games of the regular season will be at home.
