LAKEWOOD TOWNSHIP, N.J. - A 9-0 run by Georgian Court midway through the second half provided the spark the homestanding Lions needed to top Millersville 72-67 Tuesday night and win their fourth consecutive game. The Lions outscored the Marauders 43-32 in the final 20 minutes and held the Marauders to just 13 points in the final 10 minutes.
Millersville (4-5) committed a season-high 25 turnovers, and after shooting 56.5 percent from the field and 6-of-11 from three in the first half, it connected on just 1-of-10 from behind the arc in the second as a six-point halftime lead turned into a five-point loss--Millersville's fourth by single-digits.
Much of Georgian Court's comeback came at the line where it made 16-of-20 in the second half while Millersville reached the line just 13 times in the entire game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Millersville held a 56-48 lead with 9:54 to play, but the turnover bug bit the Marauders and Georgian Court capitalized. Jelani Jackson's layup started the run, and he made a steal that turned into a Justin Figueroa 3-pointer. The Marauders committed turnovers on three of the next four possessions, and the Lions completely wiped out the deficit in fewer than three minutes. Jackson tied the game and gave the Lions a 57-56 lead with 7:18 to go with a pair of free throws. Millersville went 3:42 without a point and went more than five minutes with just two points. By the time
Khari Williams hit a long two with 4:44 left, Georgian Court had built a 61-58 lead.
• Millersville trailed 70-67 with the ball and 45 seconds to play.
Mekhi Hendricks drove baseline but his contested layup missed. Forced to foul, the Marauders sent Bryce Council to the line, and he sank both. At the other end, Millersville had two good looks from three but both missed.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Williams led the Marauders with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting but scored 11 of those points in the first half.
James Sullivan played the full 40 minutes, totaling 14 points with seven rebounds, three blocks and a steal.
• Millersville won the rebounding battle 39-29 but Georgian Court held a 16-14 edge in second chance points. Georgian Court totaled 22 points off of Millersville's 25 turnovers.
POSTGAME REACTION FROM COACH STITZEL
• On the performance after a good week of practice: "We don't have that same swagger in games. We are taking the court hoping to win rather than knowing we are. In the last five minutes and in overtime against Edinboro we showed that swagger, but lately we haven't played with the confidence that we need to. We've lost our mojo a little bit. We have to come back and make adjustments. More so on the offensive end. We held (Georgian Court) to 42 percent. That's not bad."
• On the cause of the turnovers: "Have to give Georgian Court credit. They played hard and pressured the ball. Teams are doing that more to us now, watching us on film and seeing that we are trying to find our identity on offense. A lot of it is us. We aren't turning it over in practice. We are making second and third level reads but in the game we look uncomfortable in our new roles. The talent is there. They are capable of making shots and creating shots. They have to believe that we can still be a good team."
• On the call with 45 seconds left: "We were down three and ran a hammer screen, looking for Mekhi to drive. We thought we could get him a quick basket on the drive and if they overplayed, James would be open for the three. I thought maybe Mekhi got fouled. We got into scramble mode and didn't get either.."
NOTES
• Millersville is now 0-4 on the road. The Marauders are also 0-3 when scoring fewer than 82 points.
• Tuesday was the second-ever meeting between the programs. The series is now 1-1 after Millersville won the first meeting 78-51 in 2018.
