Millersville grinds out home win over Seton Hill

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Trailing Seton Hill by four with just over 10 minutes left, Millersville turned to juniors James Sullivan and Khari Williams to provide some much-needed offense. Sullivan and Williams combined for 20 points down the stretch as Millersville rallied to a 64-61 win over the visiting Griffins.

Sullivan scored 11 of his 19 in the final nine minutes, and Williams scored nine of his game-high 20 in the last 10:16. The Marauders, short-handed again with the absence of two starters, found points hard to come by. The Marauders had just 38 points through nearly 30 minutes of play but made three threes and all seven free throws for 26 points in the last 10 minutes. Millersville shot 40.7 percent from the field in the game while making 6-of-16 (.375) threes. Seton Hill converted 41.1 percent of its shots but connected on 1-of-12 threes.

The win improved Millersville to 5-5 (2-2 PSAC) and 4-0 at home. Seton Hill's record dropped to 1-6 (0-4 PSAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Williams' drive for two with 10:16 to play cut Seton Hill's lead to 42-40. Brandon Craig blocked a shot at the other end. Millersville pushed into the front court and while Sullivan's first attempt from three missed, freshman Gerard Mungo grabbed the long rebound, kicked it right back to Sullivan, who splashed a three to put the Marauders in front.
• Neither team led by more than three until Sullivan hit another three with 6:47 to play, making the score 52-48. The Marauders held the lead the rest of the way and even stretched it to 58-50 with two Sullivan foul shots with 3:26 on the clock. Seton Hill's Tommy Sekunda pulled his team to within four with a bucket at 1:48, but Millersville made a stop on Seton Hill's next offensive possession, and Mungo calmly sank two free throws with 15 seconds left to keep it a two-possession advantage for the Marauders. Nathan Davis drew a foul with 10 seconds left and made both foul shots to cut the Marauders' lead back to three, but Millersville was able to inbound the ball to Williams, who hit both foul shots to ice the win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Williams led the Marauders in scoring for the fourth time in 10 games. He hit 7-of-15 from the field, 2-of-4 from three and 4-of-4 from the line. Williams also led the team with three assists. Sullivan made 3-of-7 from three and 4-of-5 from the line.
• Craig recorded a career-high with six rebounds. Mungo scored the first bucket of his Millersville career to go with a career-high three assists. Mungo played only the final 11:31 of the game and his plus-five was a team-high in plus/minus.
• Seton Hill's Davis entered the game ranked second in the PSAC in scoring with over 22 points per game. Sullivan drew the primary defensive assignment, and Davis managed 18 points but shot 6-of-17 from the field and 0-of-6 from three.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM COACH STITZEL
• On the difference in the second half: "I just thought we moved the ball better on offense. It was one of those ugly, grind-it-out games. When you are struggling the way we've been struggling that's usually the way games become. I think we created some fastbreak points with steals, got some easy ones in transition, a couple of putbacks. I thought Brandon Craig and Mungo were huge off the bench. We got stops. That's the game sometimes in the PSAC that isn't pretty. It's Christmas time, there aren't as many people in the stands, it's a little bit of a weird time to play college basketball. Sometimes you need those possession-by-possession wins. At the end of the day, it's a win. Tomorrow we have an opportunity to get a streak going before the break."
• On the defensive effort on Davis: "James Sullivan. He sits on his moves and I thought we did a great job as a team communicating through the screens. Even when James was hit with a flare screen or a back screen or down screen we did a great job letting him know what was coming. That was one of our best defensive games of the year. We play a very explosive Cal team tomorrow so we will need all of that energy."
• On getting offense from Khari when the team is shorthanded: "I think it has been big for Khari to take that next step. With Jaden (Faulkner) on the floor, Khari could get more set threes and some easy ones. Now we are asking him to score and create. He's been getting better in practice. That's the first sign that it will get going in the games. I'm really proud of him. He has a chance to be a really good player. He works every day, he's in the gym, and I think his best days are ahead of him."

NOTES
• Friday's game marked the seventh this season in which Millersville played without at least one of its primary starters. The Marauders have played just three games at full strength and went 2-1 with a two-point road loss at Mercyhurst.
• Williams' 20-point performance was his second this season and first since scoring 23 in the season opener. Sullivan recorded a steal for the 12th consecutive game and hit a three for the 10th consecutive game. Mekhi Hendricks extended his streak of games with a 3-pointer to 11.
• Friday's game was just the third-ever trip to Pucillo Gymasium for Seton Hill. The Griffins won 92-77 in its previous trip in 2015. Millersville is 2-1 all-time at home against the Griffins and the series is now 3-3 with Millersville winning two in a row.
