Millersville falls to No. 22 Glenville State in season opener

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Millersville University women's basketball team opened its season Saturday with No. 22-ranked Glenville State and the high-powered Pioneers used a big second quarter to pull away, 137-83.

Glenville State picked up where it left off in 2018-19 as it led the nation in scoring at 102 points per game, went 30-3 and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Millersville was led by Lauren Lister's 24 points. The double-digit scoring effort put Lister at 1,000 career-points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Millersville stayed right with the nationally-ranked Pioneers through the first quarter, trailing by just a 30-24 margin after 10 minutes. But in the second, a 3-pointer from Re'Shawna Stone started a 9-0 run.
• Millersville was still within 12 with just under five minutes remaining following an Olivia Mottern lay-up, but Glenville State scored 15 points in the next three minutes and closed the half with 26 points in the final five minutes.
• Millersville limited Glenville State to 30 points and was outscored by just eight in the third but couldn't close the gap. The Marauders' defense performed admirably in the second half, allowing 53 points.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Freshman Morgan DeBeary scored 12 points and Atiya McDonald added 10 on 4-of-8 shooting.
• DeBeary and Mottern shared the team lead with six rebounds.  Mottern and McDonald led the Marauders with two steals each.

HEAD COACH MARY FLEIG QUOTES
• "Glenville State is a very good division II team and they play an entirely different style of basketball. Having to overcome that, our kids did a really nice job. We didn't block out vert well and we missed some free throws. We gave up a lot of points there and those are things we can work on and control. They're such a fast-paced team that we got caught up with it a few times. We definitely did some good things. Some of the new kids wen in and really played. They didn't play scared. It was a great learning situation."

NOTES
• Lister's 24 points in the game put her at 1,000 career-points.
• It was the first time Millersville allowed 100 points since 1993.
• Saturday was the fifth-ever meeting between the programs and the first since 2010. Glenville State holds a 4-1 lead in the series.

UP NEXT
• The Marauders return to the court in West Chester tomorrow at 12 p.m., to face Urbana.
