MILLERSVILLE, Pa. –Â
Amanda McElhare began and ended Wednesday evening surrounded by her teammates, first at a pregame Senior Night celebration and again after she scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to defeat No. 23 East Stroudsburg 2-1. Members of the No. 15-ranked Millersville women's soccer team stormed onto the pitch to pile on McElhare after she scored the golden goal with just under six minutes to go in the second overtime period.
Â
After a scoreless first half, East Stroudsburg got on the scoreboard in the 50
th minute thanks to a Corryn Gamber goal. Searching for an equalizer and running out of time, Millersville earned a corner kick in the 81
st minute. McElhare arrived at the corner flag and crossed to
Michelle Belcher at the far post, who snuck the ball in to force overtime.
Wednesday's victory improves Millersville's record to 14-2-1 (12-2-1 PSAC.) The 14 wins equals the program record that was achieved in both 2003 and 2018. The Marauders have reserved at least a second-place finish in the PSAC East. The team will assume hosting duties for a PSAC quarterfinal match on Tuesday at Pucillo Field at 6:00 p.m., with its opponent still yet to be determined until after Saturday's PSAC women's soccer results are final.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
•
Paige Mancini shut down East Stroudsburg's first quality threat of the game in the 23
rd minute. The Warriors played a ball ahead to Monica Wood, who controlled it and surged forward. Mancini was the last line of defense before a sure one-on-one opportunity, and stuck her foot in perfectly for the standing tackle to dispossess Wood and end the threat.
• The Marauders' defense was again tested in the 28
th minute, when East Stroudsburg took a short corner that led to Danielle Cary having a clean look at goal. She fired the shot but it was parried away by the diving
Reagan Kolinski. The ball rebounded right to Brienn Seaman who sent it toward frame again, but
Chandler Garcia was there to block it and clear the danger.
• The Warriors opened the scoring in the 50
th minute. Jessica Woodbyrne crossed a ball in from the right wing to the center of the pitch, where Corryn Gamber volleyed it into the bottom right corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.
• Millersville waited until the 81
st minute to equalize. Increasing the pressure and pace of the game, the Black and Gold earned a corner kick, which
Amanda McElhare sent in low and hard across the face of goal, avoiding multiple defenders to find its way to
Michelle Belcher at the far post. Cool and collected, Belcher left-footed it just inside the post to make it 1-1 and force the game into overtime.
• After a scoreless first overtime, it was time for some more magic from McElhare in the 104
th minute.
Cassie Blyth spotted her making a run into the box and delivered a pinpoint ball that bounced once and was looped towards the goal by McElhare. The ball soared into the net to end the game and give the Ville the 2-1 victory.
