LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Add another historical milestone to the Millersville women's volleyball team's 2019 season. On Friday, the coaches of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), named Millersville senior
Jayci Suseland the PSAC Athlete of the Year. Senior setter
Katie Laughman scored All-PSAC Second Team recognition, and junior
Lindsey Blevins earned a third team honor.
Suseland is the sixth Marauder recognized by the PSAC as athlete of the year, but the previous five were at the Eastern Division level. The PSAC began its conference-wide awards (without divisional distinction) in 2016. No Marauder has won an athlete of the year award since 2001. Suseland is also the first Marauder since Jennie Rohrbaugh in 2005 and 2006 to be named All-PSAC First Team in back-to-back seasons. Laughman is the first Millersville setter since 2012 to pick up a postseason honor. Blevins makes her second appearance on an All-PSAC team after landing second team recognition in 2018.
The trio helped the Marauders win a program record 25 matches and make back-to-back PSAC Tournament appearances for the first time since 1998-1999. Millersville also earned a No. 4 ranking in the NCAA Atlantic Region, putting the team on the verge of qualifying for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1995.
Suseland, a three-time PSAC Southeast Division Athlete of the Week, led the PSAC in hitting percentage at a .330 clip despite totaling at least 70 more attempts than any other player in the top 13. She ranked fourth in the league in total kills and broke the single-season Millersville record that had stood since 1995. After Tuesday's playoff match, Suseland has 441 kills--38 more than the previous record.
Laughman ranked fourth in the PSAC in assists and set a Millersville single-season record with 1,137 in 33 matches. The previous record had stood since 1992. Laughman led the team with 20 double-doubles, ranking second on the team with 356 digs. Laughman totaled 3,204 assists in just three seasons at the team's primary setter--a total that ranks third all-time. She is the first player in program history with 900-plus assists in three seasons. She is also one of two players with 3,000 assists and 1,000 digs.
Blevins' 374 kills were a career high and a total that ranks seventh all-time at Millersville. She ranked 13th in the PSAC in that category, and during the season, she became the 10th player in program history with 1,000 career kills. Blevins' versatility was key to the Marauders' success as she also ranked third on the team with 325 digs and nine double-doubles. Blevins landed her first career PSAC Southeast Athlete of the Week award on Nov. 18.
Millersville's NCAA Tournament fate will be announced on Monday, Nov. 25 at 7:30 p.m. Fans can watch the selection show at NCAA.com.
