Millersville clinches home playoff match with sweep of Shepherd

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - There was absolutely no let down Saturday for the Millersville women's volleyball team. After an emotional, five-set win over division-leading Shippensburg on Friday, the Marauders quickly dispatched Shepherd in three sets, winning a match that decided home court advantage for the first round of the PSAC Tournament.

Shepherd (26-5, 14-5), the Atlantic Region's No. 6-ranked team, and Millersville (25-7, 15-4) entered the match with identical 14-4 PSAC records, but Millersville's decisive 25-17, 25-20, 25-12 win clinched the No. 4 seed in the PSAC Tournament, and now Shepherd, the No. 5 seed, will travel back to Pucillo Gymnasium on Tuesday.

The win was Millersville's 25th of the season--the most in program history. The Marauders also improved to 14-0 at home and extended its home winning streak to 24.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• Millersville's attackers blistered the Shepherd defense for 50 kills and a .336 hitting percentage while Shepherd managed 31 kills to 19 errors and a .110 hitting percentage. Lindsey Blevins followed her 17-kill performance against Shippensburg with 17 more and a .289 hitting percentage against Shepherd. Jayci Suseland added 13 kills to two errors (.478) and Haley Butler tallied nine kills to one error (.381). The Marauders also frustrated Shepherd's kills leader Peyton Linbland into eight kills and six errors for a .080 hitting percentage.
• The turning point of the opening set came early. Two kills by Suseland and an ace from Chyna Gubbings helped the Marauders to a 5-0 run, breaking a 9-9 tie. Millersville led by no fewer than three points the rest of the way and closed the set on a 5-0 run with Katie Laughman serving.
• Score-wise, the second set was the most competitive, but Millersville never trailed and led by as many as five while piling up 19 kills to four errors. The Marauders put on a hitting clinic in the third, posting a .429 hitting percentage with 16 kills and one error. Blevins posted five and Gubbings recorded four in the set.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Laughman totaled a match-high 37 assists to go with nine digs. Kat Forry led the Marauders with 11 digs.
• Of Millersville's three service aces, two belonged to Blevins. Suseland (five) and Carley Baughman (four) combined for nine block assists.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH BRIAN SMITH
On concluding the regular season with 25 wins: "I'm proud. I got choked up in the locker room right before we came out to play. Those seniors have done so much for the program and everyone in the locker room has contributed to get to where we are. Any coach just wants the team to be playing well at the end and we are playing some of our best ball. We've played some of the best opponents in the conference down the stretch and that bodes well for our confidence heading into the PSAC Tournament. A lot of the individual records are great, but getting to 25 wins today, in this era of volleyball when we are playing all teams--not just the East--it's an amazing accomplishment for this team. I told them in the locker room that they have set the bar a lot higher for everyone who comes into the program. The expectations will be higher."
On the team's hitting efficiency: "They did a good job executing the game plan. The first time out, we could see that Shepherd was doubling up on Jayci and trying to slow her down. We were going high to the pin and we needed to speed that up and challenge some of the double blocks. We were aware of it and started going quicker to the pin. Down the stretch, Carley had some good looks, and the team did a good job buying into the game plan and executing."

NOTES
• Millersville volleyball started in 1990, and the previous record for wins in a season was 24, which was set in 1995 and 1997.
• Forry's 504 digs on the season rank just outside the single-season top 10 but she is now one of just three players in program history with two 500-dig seasons. Her 1,497 career digs ranks fourth all-time. Baughman also moved into a tie for sixth in single-season block assists with 74.

UP NEXT
• Millersville hosts Shepherd Tuesday for the first round of the PSAC Tournament. Millersville's last win the tournament came in 1996. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
