Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Bryan Kast, Athletic Communications Assistant

Men's soccer continues road success, defeats Shepherd 2-1

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The Millersville men's soccer team spent the majority of the week on the road but secured another victory on Saturday 2-1 over Shepherd University in West Virginia. The Marauders also picked up a 1-0 win on Wednesday in New York against St. Thomas Aquinas.

Bob Hennessey and Anthony Calamia scored for the Marauders, the first time each player has scored in the 2019 season.

With the win, Millersville improves its season record to 5-3-1 overall (3-0-1 in PSAC play.)

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• It did not take long for Millersville to get on the scoreboard. In the 6th minute, Frank Astarita picked up a loose ball outside the left corner of the box. Dancing around a defender, he struck a shot, pulling it across the face of goal. Bob Hennessey then made a heads-up play on the far post and followed it up with a good finish from six yards out to give the Marauders the early lead.

•  Shepherd found an opportunity to equalize in the 24th minute. Adam Rice assisted Justin Daniels for the goal. It was Rice's first assist and Daniels' first goal of 2019.

•  The game remained 1-1 until the 66th minute, when Anthony Calamia made an incredible solo run. He picked up the ball about 30 yards away from goal and dribbled skillfully down the sideline. Making his way past several defenders, he got a quick shot off from a narrow angle that flew through the keeper's legs and into the back of the net. The goal turned out to be the game-winning moment of the match.

POST GAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON
• On today's performance compared to last Wednesday's vs. St. Thomas Aquinas: "It was a much better performance in terms of effort and intensity. We created lots of opportunities but didn't make the most of them. We lacked a bit of quality on our final pass/decision making and why we made the game harder than it needed to be.

• On the contributions of Bob Hennessey and Anthony Calamia: "For sure we need more guys contributing on the point scoring side of things so it was good to see both guys stepping up today. Calamia was much better today and showed a lot more of what he's capable of. We have talked to Hennessey about having a better final product so getting a goal today was great.

• On preparing the team for the week ahead: "We need to keep grinding out results. We will continue to work on cleaning up things on the training field and preparing for two tough opponents and doing everything we can to keep this run going."

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
•  Millersville out-shot Shepherd 18-8 (12-3 in the second half) and held the advantage 7-2 in corner kicks.
•  Bob Hennessey's goal was the first of his collegiate career.
•  Anthony Calamia also scored for the first time this season after putting in three total goals during the 2018 season.
•  Frank Astarita's assist was his first of 2019. He is second on the team in total points (5) behind Jacob Gosselin's team-leading 13.
•  Marauders goalkeeper Darian McCauley was credited with two saves in the game.

NOTES
•  The game marks the ninth time ever that Millersville and Shepherd have met on the soccer pitch and the first since 2010. The Marauders improve to 7-2 in the all-time series, including six straight wins. Shepherd University officially joined the PSAC in 2019.
