Blevins powers Marauders past Clarion in three

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Lindsey Blevins led a lights-out Millersville attack with 17 kills, and the Marauders rolled to a 3-0 (28-26, 25-18, 25-18) win over Clarion for their 18th consecutive home victory.

At 16-6 (6-3 PSAC), Millersville has already matched last season's win total and did so Friday on the strength of a .308 hitting percentage--totaling 11 more kills than the visiting Golden Eagles (12-8, 4-4 PSAC).

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• Millersville started quickly, and the first set looked like a runaway with the Marauders leading 20-8 following a run of eight consecutive points with Chyna Gubbings serving. Clarion made it more than interesting, though, rallying back with Alexa Cundy serving. Julia Holden delivered five kills and Cundy added four aces in a run of 13 consecutive Clarion points. But immediately after the Golden Eagles took the lead, Jayci Suseland sent home a kill for the Marauders, evening the score. The clubs traded points until a Clarion service error opened the door for Millersville. With the score 27-26, Katie Laughman set up Blevins for the set-winner. Millersville totaled 16 kills to three errors in the set.
• Any momentum that Clarion built with the late first-set comeback try was quickly halted at the start of the second set. The Marauders raced to a 10-3 advantage, again running off six consecutive points with Gubbings at the serve. Millersville never again trailed, building the lead to as many as seven at two different points in the set. Blevins, Carley Baughman, Gubbings and Suseland combined for 16 of the team's 17 kills and made just two hitting errors among them.
• Millersville was again efficient in the third set, steadily pulling away for the 25-18 match-clinching win. Blevins posted six kills in the set to lead the way.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Blevins finished with a .378 hitting percentage--her best mark of the season when recording at least 12 kills.
• Emily Hoffman and Kat Forry keyed the Marauders' defensive efforts with 16 digs apiece. Baughman led the team with four of the 12 block assists.
• Laughman finished with 37 assists.

COACH BRIAN SMITH'S THOUGHTS
• On closing out the road swing with a win: "We knew we could have success serving deep and that is one of Chyna's specialties. Because she serves deep and every once in a while that float will drop out of the air, and that's really hard for teams to adjust. Just like we showed in the first set, you have one or two bad passes and psychologically it gets in your head."
• On sweeping a rival: "In between sets one and two, Jayci said that we needed to come out fast because of the way we finished that first set. That comeback gave Clarion confidence. But our team responded. Our upperclassmen have played a lot of years against Clarion and have had some beat downs. Last year we got them at home and that changed our attitude towards them. We knew we couldn't stop fighting for it."
• On Blevins' performance: "It's important. They came in 4-4 and we were 5-3. There are teams at the top like Shepherd, Gannon, Shippensburg, and then you have a bunch of teams in a pack. We win one and we are up two now. As teams start to wind down the conference play, these are all very important matches. Tomorrow against Slippery Rock is an important match."

NOTES
• Millersville's .308 hitting percentage was its best against a PSAC team this season and its highest mark since Sept. 21--a span of nine matches.
• Blevins has recorded double-digit kills in nine of the last 11 matches. Blevins also surpassed 900 career kills in the match, moving up to 902.
• Friday's win was Millersville's fourth in 20 tries against Clarion, but it is the second year in a row that the Marauders have topped Clarion. Three of the wins have come under the watch of Smith.

UP NEXT
• Millersville is back at home on Saturday afternoon, hosting Slippery Rock at 1 p.m.
