No. 13 Marauders sweep season series with Lock Haven after 2-0 win

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. –  Just four days after losing a game for the first time this season, the No. 13-ranked Millersville University women's soccer team bounced back with a 2-0 win over Lock Haven. Swirling wind gusts around Pucillo Field caused havoc with the flight of the ball all game long but the Marauders were able to get an early goal courtesy of Savannah Rennix. The team would have to attack into the wind in the second half, slowing down the offense a bit, but were able to find the insurance goal from Amanda McElhare to close out the game.

Millersville's overall record improves to 11-1 overall and 9-1 in PSAC play. The team sits atop the PSAC East standings in a first-place tie with Bloomsburg University, who also were victorious on Wednesday night.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• The Marauders lit up the scoreboard in the 9th minute. Attacking into the wind in the first half and earning a corner kick, Kay Liebl sent a beautiful cross directly to the head of freshman Savannah Rennix on the far post. Rennix headed the ball home for the quick 1-0 lead.
• Millersville launched eight more shots in the first half but would have to wait until the second to truly threaten Lock Haven goalkeeper Karly Trillhaase. In the 53rd minute Liebl threaded the ball over to Morgan Winchock on the left wing. Winchock created enough space for the shot to force a diving save from Trillhaase.
• In the 69th minute it was Haley Peachey's turn to give Trillhaase a scare. Peachey cut inside from the left wing into the penalty box and put her boot through the ball but the wind caught hold of it and pushed it wide to the right of the goal.
• The constant barrage of shots finally got to Trillhaase in the 80th minute, as senior Amanda McElhare received the ball about 30 yards out from goal. With no pressure coming from the Lock Haven defense, McElhare simply launched it from distance, the velocity of the shot too much for Trillhaase to collect and the ball bounced off her hands and into the net for a 2-0 Millersville lead.
• Alexis Spencer almost made it 3-0 in the 83rd minute with a shot from a tough angle. The ball flashed across the face of goal and barely missed the target, bouncing off the left post instead.

POST GAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH MATT PROCOPIO
• On playing in the high winds out there tonight: "Wind played a factor in the first half with the bigger balls we tried to play going long more frequently. In the second half the wind was even stronger and unpredictable so their punts went farther and longer passes we tried to play would hang up a bit. However, we need to be able to handle whatever elements we play in."

• On the overall performance: "It was okay. We need to do a better job of limiting our turnovers. We did some good things in possession, which we had a lot of, but then we would give the ball away and have to deal with a dangerous counter attack. It's good to get a positive result and we move on to some much needed rest to refuel for the end of the season."

• On how important a few days of rest is: "The rest is key for us. We got some rest over fall break but it wasn't as much as we needed. We have off Saturday so it allows us to do some different things in a session or two. It is vital that we make the most of those sessions before Tuesday when we begin to focus on Shippensburg."

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Millersville held the 16-7 advantage on total shots in the game. The Marauders also earned more corner kicks (5-2.)
• The goals from Savannah Rennix and Amanda McElhare were both players' third of the 2019 season.
• Kay Liebl's assist was her fourth of the season.
• McElhare led the Marauders in shots with four. Liebl was just behind with three, while Lauren Downey, Rennix and Haley Peachey finished the game with two.
• Freshman goalkeeper Reagan Kolinski was credited with five saves in the game.

NOTES
• With the win, Millersville's all-time record versus Lock Haven moves to 12-11-1
• After earning a single point from her assist tonight, Kay Liebl now trails Becky Morris by two points on the all-time points scorer list. Liebl already passed Morris to become Millersville's career goals leader earlier this season.
• Millersville has yet to play an overtime game this season.

UP NEXT
• The Marauders return home to Pucillo Field on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 5 p.m. to face Shippensburg University. Millersville defeated the Raiders 3-0 earlier this season.
