Men's soccer bests Bloomsburg 3-1 to stay perfect in PSAC play

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – A PSAC soccer match always demands 90 minutes of focus and intensity, but the Millersville men's soccer team kicked it into high gear for a two minute stretch in the first half, scoring two goals that would end up being all they needed in today's eventual 3-1 victory over Bloomsburg University.

Jacob Gosselin continued his torrid goalscoring pace and knocked home his eighth goal of 2019 in the 18th minute. The strike was a call to action for the rest of the Marauders and just two minutes later another Gosselin shot rebounded off of the goalkeeper, allowing Anthony Calamia to find the back of the net and set the tone for the rest of the game.

The Marauders have not lost since Sept. 25 versus Gannon University and remain unbeaten in PSAC play with a 4-0-2 conference record (6-3-2 overall.) Millersville has completed the first rotation of playing each PSAC East opponent and now embarks on the second half of the season.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• After a sluggish start, Millersville sparked to life in the 18th minute. Sophomore Spencer Shortt sprayed a ball forward that caught the Bloomsburg defense napping and Jacob Gosselin ran onto it. Huskies goalkeeper Nathan Slotnick came off his line to shut down the angle but Gosselin bent the ball around him to put the Marauders up 1-0.
• The goal energized Millersville and led to another chance in the 20th minute. Matteo Adiletta sent a ball into the box and waves of Black and Gold attackers followed. Gosselin had a great look at a second goal but his strike was parried away by Slotnick, falling right to the boot of Anthony Calamia, who angled the shot perfectly into the top left corner of the net to make it a 2-0 lead.
• Millersville almost made it 3-0 in the 48th minute, when Spencer Shortt again delivered a fantastic ball forward to Nathan Erb, who completely fooled Slotnick and cut the ball back to his left. Bloom's goal was completely unguarded but the angle was too tight for a proper shot from Erb and it sailed into the side netting.
• Bloomsburg was able to get a goal back in the 56th minute thanks to a set piece opportunity. Olly Whitham whipped in a corner kick to the head of Zach LoBasso, who forced it into the top right corner to bring the Huskies within a goal, 2-1.
• The Marauders' response to the goal came just a minute later, when a ball floated across the box towards Bob Hennessey. He headed it back across the face of goal for Erb and this time there would be no doubt; Erb's shot sailed into the goal to give Millersville the 3-1 lead.

POST GAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON
• On today's effort: "Overall extremely pleased with the performance. I thought we came out a bit flat, they had more energy and more vigor about them. We started to claw our way into the game and got the first goal that gave us a big lift. Getting the next one was extremely important as well and then we controlled the game throughout. The response to them scoring was as pleasing as anything. a lot of things we've been talking about--getting the final piece in the attacking third and around the box--we saw that today in the work we've put in the last several days. It really came out today.

On the growth of the team through half of the season: "We had a lot of fantastic individual performances today, too many to name to be fair. We had six or seven guys who were absolutely great. This is the level that they can play at, we know it's a level they can play at, I think hopefully now after this kind of result they have the belief that they can play at this level of intensity and style for an entire 90 minutes and control the game."

On more tough PSAC games on the horizon: "We have to wake up Monday morning and get back to work. Now we're into the second half of the PSAC games and they're going to be even harder. Everyone's coming after us now, plus a lot of teams might be in that desperation phase--one more loss and they're done--so every game is absolutely huge for us. Thankfully we have most of them at home."
