Men's soccer storms past Lock Haven 4-1 to maintain unbeaten PSAC record

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Millersville men's soccer team battled the elements and Lock Haven University on Wednesday night, falling behind early but scoring a flood of goals in the second half to win, 4-1. The first half was marked with constant downpours of rain and a Lock Haven goal from the PSAC's leading scorer Andrea DiSomma, his tenth of the season. The Marauders equalized in the 32nd minute thanks to a true team effort, as an Anthony Calamia cross found Jacob Gosselin's head that found Nathan Maynard's foot for the finish.

The rain let up in the second half and it was full speed ahead for Millersville, scoring goals in the 59th, 63rd and 88th minute from Gosselin, Frank Astarita and Bob Hennessey respectively.

The Marauders remain unbeaten in PSAC play with a 5-0-2 record (7-3-2 overall.) The team also holds the top spot in the PSAC East standings with 17 total points, one more than rival West Chester.

The Marauders have not lost since Sept. 25 and have now swept the season series versus Lock Haven.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• Lock Haven's Andrea DiSomma proved why he is the league's top scorer in the 12th minute. Never afraid to shoot, he rifled one from outside the box that skipped past Marauders goalkeeper Darian McCauley and ricocheted off the far post, rolling across the face of the goal and tucking itself just inside the near post to put the Bald Eagles up 1-0.
• Millersville almost equalized in the 19th minute. Nathan Erb got free down the right wing and cut inside to earn a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper. Camden Cook came off his line to shut down the angle and Erb's shot was denied.
• The Marauders finally broke through in the 32nd minute. Anthony Calamia sent a beautiful cross flashing towards the far post, where Jacob Gosselin headed it forcefully off the crossbar. The ball rebounded right to the foot of Nathan Maynard who smashed it home to tie the game at one goal apiece.
• Gosselin would add to his point total in the 59th minute. Frank Astarita fired a rocket towards goal that bounced off the keeper and right to Gosselin's head, nodding it into the open goal to give the Black and Gold the 2-1 lead.
• A rainbow appeared over Pucillo Field and the Marauders' offense found an embarrassment of riches. The roles were reversed between Gosselin and Astarita in the 63rd minute, with some one-touch passing on display. Matteo Adiletta sent the through ball to Gosselin, who tapped it over to Astarita who sent a clinical finish into the bottom left corner for the Marauders' third goal.
• The offensive pressure did not let up for Millersville. In the 88th minute, Spencer Shortt picked out Bob Hennessey in the box with a beautiful pass and Hennessey booted it into almost the exact same spot Astarita did 25 minutes before, securing the 4-1 victory.

POST GAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON
• On today's rain affecting the game: "We couldn't prepare for it, we haven't seen any rain for weeks and weeks. I don't think we did well with it early on. Made some bad decisions and we shot ourselves in the foot by giving them a goal. You're never going to have the prettiest game in these conditions but Lock Haven played well today and they pushed us for quite a while."

• On getting back into it after falling behind 1-0: "We remained patient, kept plugging away and made some slight adaptations that we needed to do and eventually just wore them down and took our chances well. I thought all the goals were very good today but most importantly just the perseverance and having the confidence that we'll get there in the end."

• On doing better at finishing the chances the team creates: "The final finishing piece is what we have needed to find. If we find that consistently, our game will be taken to the next level. That's why you can put threes and fours on the board instead of the ones we were doing for so long. Our last two games in particular we've done that (against Bloomsburg and in tonight's game.) Against East Stroudsburg we didn't create enough—we had a ton of the ball and didn't do enough with it. It's a progression and the season is about a journey and getting a little bit better every time you play."
