East Stroudsburg, Pa. - The Warriors opened the game on a 14-4 run, but the Millersville University women's basketball team took control from there and won 80-67 to snap a string of three-straight losses on the road and earn its first PSAC East win away from Pucillo Gymnasium. The Marauders entered the second quarter down 19-13 but outscored East Stroudsburg 25-14 in the period to take a 38-33 lead into halftime. Millersville never trailed in the second half, leading by as many as 26 in the fourth quarter.
"It was a very shaky start," head coach
Mary Fleig said. "We were not all on the same page both offensively and defensively. We were out of sync, but I was glad to see us settle in and reorganize ourselves."
The Marauders (8-12, 5-8 PSAC) move past the Warriors and into sixth place in the conference standings, while East Stroudsburg (8-12, 5-8 PSAC) continues its struggles, losing its fifth-straight game.
Lauren Lister played well on both sides of the court, scoring a game-high 27 points, tying a career high with eight rebounds and setting a career high with four blocks. She had never had more than one block in a game prior to tonight.
"
Lauren Lister played an all-around great game," Fleig said. "She was rebounding the ball really nicely and did a good job of getting to the line and scoring."
Olivia Mottern nearly notched a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. She tied career highs with five steals and four assists.
Courtney Dimoff came alive in the second half, scoring all 13 of her points and shooting 5-for-7 from the floor, including 3-for-4 from beyond the arch. She added five rebounds, three steals, two assists and one block to her performance.
"
Courtney Dimoff helped us a lot with our press attack," Fleig said.
A 16-4 run by Millersville in the second period saw it take the lead for good. The Marauders shot 62 percent (8-for-13) in the period and held the Warriors to 0-for-8 from beyond the arch in the first half, and just 2-for-18 in the game.
Millersville followed its strong second quarter with an even more dominant third quarter, outscoring East Stroudsburg 26-9 in the period, including a 15-0 run to end the period, to put the game out of reach.
"We ran on them pretty well in the second quarter, but we really ran on them in the third quarter," Fleig said. "They missed shots and we did a really good job of transitioning."
The start of the game did not go as smoothly for the Marauders, who turned the ball over seven times in the first quarter. Millersville recovered in the second quarter to cause seven Warrior turnovers, scoring 11 points off those turnovers.
"For as bad as we played in the first quarter, we were only down six at the end of it," Fleig said. "We needed to get on the boards and had to make some adjustments on defense. We switched to man-to-man and executed on offense."
