Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville University women's basketball team finished the third quarter on an 8-1 run to enter the final period with Lock Haven tied, 52-52, but the Bald Eagles outscored the Marauders 29-17 the rest of the game to earn an 81-69 victory. There were 18 lead changes in the game and neither team held a lead of more than seven points until late in the fourth quarter.
Millersville (6-12, 3-8 PSAC) lost its third-straight game, while Lock Haven (9-9, 5-7 PSAC) snapped a four-game losing streak.
Samantha Brusha tied the game with a 3-pointer to close out the third quarter. A layup from
Lauren Lister to open the fourth quarter gave the Marauders the lead, and Brusha extended the lead to five with another 3-pointer. The Bald Eagles quickly tied the game again and, after another layup from Lister, Taylor Leidy sank her second-straight three to give Lock Haven a one-point lead.
Courtney Dimoff was fouled and made both of her free throws to give Millersville a 61-60 lead, but then the Bald Eagles went on a 16-2 run that spanned more than five minutes to put the game away.
"We didn't have an answer to their run in the fourth quarter like we did on their runs earlier in the game," head coach
Mary Fleig said. "Our defense made it too easy for them to score on us."
Brusha (18),
Olivia Mottern (16), Lister (15) and
Kendra Bamberger (13) all scored in double figures and combined for all but seven of the Marauders' points. This marks the fourth time this season Brusha, who shot 58.3 percent (7-for-12) including 4-for-6 from beyond the arch, was the team's leading scorer.
"
Samantha Brusha did a good job at the start of the game and got some open threes for us," Fleig said. "She was a big part of some of our runs."
Coming off a career-high 23 points in her last game, Mottern had another strong performance with a 54.5 shooting percentage (6-for-11) and 57.1 3-point percentage (4-for-7) while notching a game-high three steals.
Millersville recorded a 37.5 (9-for-24) 3-point percentage against an opponent that entered the game allowing a 27.5 3-point percentage to its opponents, third-lowest in the conference. The Marauders also turned the ball over just 11 times, compared to Lock Haven's 17 turnovers. Millersville scored 28 points off those 17 Bald Eagles turnovers.
