Shepherdstown, W.Va. - The Millersville University women's basketball team lost on the road to Shepherd by a score of 88-71 on Wednesday afternoon. It marks the Rams' first win in program history over the Marauders.
Millersville falls to 4-8 overall, while the Rams improve to 5-6.
Shepherd did not lead by more than six throughout the first quarter and held a 24-18 lead with just over 30 seconds remaining in the period.
Samantha Brusha cut the deficit in half with a 3-pointer on the Marauders' final possession of the quarter. After back-to-back free throws by the Rams to start the second quarter, Millersville went on a 7-0 run in just over one minute of action and shot 3-for-3 from the floor during that stretch, highlighted by a 3-pointer from
Olivia Mottern that gave the Marauders their first lead of the game.Â
Kayla Tibbs tied the game with a jumper, but
Lauren Lister gave Millersville the lead again with a jumper of her own. That started a 10-7 run for the Marauders during which they went 5-for-6 from the floor and held the Rams to 2-for-7 from the floor to build up a 38-35 lead. Tibbs, the Mountain East Conference (MEC) leader in 3-point percentage, tied the game with a 3-pointer and that sparked a run that Millersville was unable to overcome. Shepherd finished the quarter on a 14-2 run to bring a 49-40 lead into halftime.
The Rams outscored the Marauders 22-11 in the third quarter and lead by as many as 31 in the fourth quarter. Although Millersville outscored Shepherd 20-17 in the final quarter and finished the game on a 15-4 run, the Rams held on for the win.
"We were not in the right mindset today," head coach
Mary Fleig said. "We got frustrated and were unable to pull ourselves out of that. If nothing else it was a learning experience for how we should respond together as a team through adversity."
Four Marauders scored in double-digits, with Brusha notching a team-high 17 points. She also pulled down a team-high six rebounds and shot 4-for-5 from beyond the arch.
Lauren Lister was second on the team with 15 points, while
Chandera Jones-Aryeh scored a career-high 14 and
Olivia Mottern tallied 11.Â

Chandera Jones-Aryeh notched career highs in field goals made (4) and free throws (6). She also registered her first career block.Â

Olivia Mottern each recorded a team-high three steals.Â
• The Marauder bench contributed 29 points. They contributed 19 points in their last three games combined.Â
• Shepherd held a slim 30-29 edge in rebounds. The Rams also turned the ball 22 times compared to Millersville's 19 turnovers.Â
NOTES
• Shepherd earned its first win against the Marauders after losing its' previous nine games against Millersville.Â
• The Marauders finish the season with a 3-4 record against non-conference opponents.Â

• Millersville will play its' first home game in more than a month when it hosts West Chester on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 1 p.m. in Pucillo Gymnasium.Â
